Thanks, Catmint. The cost is like about 5.95 for one of those bales. Really cheap. I think it's cheaper than a bale of straw, and almost certainly cheaper than bagged mulch.

The tomatoes and watermelons I tried last summer didn't ripen well--I think they did not get enough sun. I wonder if it's possible to grow tomatoes in containers?

OH yes, it is and many people do. Use larger containers, at least 5 gallon bucket size or larger. Tomatoes do need sun.

I have grown all sorts of veggies in containers including peas and beans, cucumbers, tomatoes, melons, peppers, squash, eggplants, baby okra and of course herbs.
