Bee and Butterfly Puddles

Bees and butterflies need water, too, but most birdbaths are too deep for them. Here's an idea for a safe place in your garden for them to drink.

Hurray!

Thanks for the reminder!
Now that I have my automatic watering system in place I can get it misted every day (so I stop forgetting and letting it go bone dry!)

At my current house it is most popular with the bees and mud-dauber wasps! (set up one separate just for the mud-daubers filled with good wet soil after they stole half my emergent pond plants soil! the bees like the clean sand)

And a tip I had heard for butterflies is to add some salt (non-iodized sea salt) as the males need it (salt and minerals), its fairly hard to (normally) find in nature (not so much now that our roads are covered in salt each winter...but still worth a try)

I tip my hat to you.
If we had no holes in our leaves we would have no butterflies!

I need to do this again. I buy clay saucers - the kind that go under clay pots and use them. I get the ones that have been glazed, so the clay doesn't soak up all the moisture. When I did this in the past. I "buried" the saucer (to make it level with the ground) near my butterfly bushes so it was easier for them to find.

I'm counting on it. It's on the table within 3' of a potted blue salvia & a potted red salvia. I may have to use a different saucer. This is one that was handy & is clay, not glazed. Today I had to put water in it 3 times & that was after I made it @ 2pm. So I may need to do a plastic saucer instead.

I'd love to set one up close to my butterfly bush but my dog would drink the water....he already drains my birdbath every chance he gets!! Grumbling : lol:
I hate losing plants....I know they are "just plants" but when you nurse them along and baby them and get them to grow, bloom, and be pretty and they die....it's like losing a friend..... Crying

Kim, there's an easy work-around to that... fill the saucer with sand/pea-gravel and just keep it moist. The butterflies can get what they need, but there's no water for the dog to lap up Thumbs up

Great idea. I'm going to try it, too.
