same mystery place you already guessed nodding
philos don't grow in water, do they? colo/alocasias usually have diff veining...so this leaves anthuriums?...
here's a full pic by the ponds (which are thankfully public):

Anthuriums don't grow in water either. There's alot of other Aroids besides Colocasia's that will grow in water tho. I bet @eclayne (Evan) would know or @homer1958 (Drew)

The leaves are a foot or more skylark? We have 232 plants that have a spadix (aroids +1) and can be grown in water in our DB. I was reminded of Anthurium too but have not come across one that could grow submerged.

P.S.
P.C. Boyce notes it is invasive where it's happy.

...and it's happy in fresh and tidal swamps, water or bogs.

Skylark, the pics I put in the database are Peter Boyce's from CATE Araceae. He's the one who identified your pics. Maybe it would do well in one of those galvanized steel tubs? Make a mini-bog! Big Grin

oh-ho-ho-ho! i am an extreme gardener for sure!?! but a bog tub? mm-m ..here's a pic of my balcony, where mohito's and margaritas like to be drunk nodding
it's up in the sky. and my jades and aralias and ivies and calamondins and-and...others... claimed it first, as they won't thrive otherwise. i've been reducing a bit this year, as it's just too much and i can't go away for more then 3-4 days in the summer heat...but it's a pretty representative picture Smiling

purple, yes...you surely do know my cushions by now?! unique vintage nodding unmistakable ;).
mj, some stuff goes into bags under shelves (corms/bulbs/tubers - which is exactly why i grow them), petunias, coleus dries up, and the rest...well, since i don't have a garage or cold storage...it all somehow or the other stuffs into nooks and crannies. i do not usually post THOSE pics...in the living room a lot of stuff goes behind the couch, so it's invisible and the rest gets an understory brush all of a sudden (wall to wall). i have a very large expanse of fl to ceil windows, they are my 'green walls', so the light is good.
The xmas tree presents extreme challenge, as it occupies the best light corner and is HUGE. i weaseled out of putting it up last year (2 weeks to dress to perfection, 1 week to take down and pack...to perfection...!)- so that was a BIG expansion for planties. it's only jades, aralias, crotons, calamondins, sansi and ivies, you know... Hilarious!
here's a plug of my tree, just the TOP half of it.. i am a maximalist ;). may the memory of it live forever... Smiling

thanks, purple. and i know that you now have a little h.'emerald gem'. there seems to be very little available info about homalomena in general. how are you growing yours? you 're in good company with peter boyce - just a few people who grow them ;). i really like the veining (on both).

Oh, TY for asking, but it'll be a few yrs until I'm in a position to say much about Homalomena. I have a little start I got in trade in a box about 6 wks/2 mos ago. It's still in the 'ignore it' phase. I did move the pot to a bit more sun after it perked up. If I pay attention to new plants, they die, so I've put this one on ignore until I need to bring it in/repot it, probably both. Out of the corner of my eye, it's doing GREAT! (With a few friends.)

Thumb of 2014-09-14/purpleinopp/acac6e

I wonder about its' apparent rarity too. Are they mistaken for other plants, or really just not sold? Out of fashion currently? Doesn't seem to have a common name? Hard to discuss since everyone's going to want to say, "I've not seen them for sale" but then start wondering, "...or have I?" Who posts a pic on a forum, "Look at my 30-yr old Homalomena?" Nobody I've seen, forums or, the past couple yrs, on FB. Hope to someday!

I think the movement/oxygen content of the water is something to consider? A stagnant bucket is not comparable to a 'live' pond, or moving stream. Contact with the ground, and other factors add oxygen to the water? Not something I want to try, but if I did, I'd put an aquarium bubbler thing in there.
