I wonder if it is an Araucaria species?
This site shows a photo of female cones on Araucaria araucana (or at least the article talks about that species, though it is not absolutely clear that the photo is of the same species):

The foliage on your tree/shrub(?) looks finer but the cones look similar.

Well, wouldn't that be interesting...I'm familiar with Monkey Puzzles, in fact, alot of them grow around here....I wonder if it's possible that this poor thing could have been in that pot so long that it's that stunted? It's not the typical branching structure though...I'll check further on that...thank you...

Whew, I give up! I have a vague recollection of a very good florist here in town getting this in for use in arrangements, along with a lot of other really neat Australian flowers and foliage, but I may be mistaken... and anyway, I can't remember what it was called or never asked.

Neither...I have a friend who had a nursery and she has given me a lot of plants, mostly in good shape, but also some that were going to be tossed and I just have to give them a chance...lol...this one has no tag and she didn't remember what it is. I think you may be right though...stunted and twisted as it is, the branches do look to be opposing and those little 'balls' are on the branch terminals. I needed to know before I stuck it in the ground somewhere...it had that look of a tree that was going to shoot up...lol...and I have no room for an araucaria, bit I will bump it up into a big pot and baby it and see what becomes of it. Then someone else may be able to use it. The first time I saw the Monkey Puzzles was when we moved to Washington and I was fascinated by them...now we've moved to far Northern California and I find them grown a lot here. I see that they can be grown on small city lots and also do not blow over in our often high winds.

Hi, Mike.....I'll check, it is a bit like a warped Rice Flower, isn't it? I had one that I left, gave away when we moved, but it had not gotten that large, nor had the weird little 'balls'...I'll go look at some pics...

Mine is still hanging in there even though repotted. The other Aussies that I brought home have done incredibly well once gotten into the ground, so this guy is finally going into the ground today now that I know what it is....

Nope, I was wrong...it is not leucandendron linifolium....it has 'balls' only at the ends of stems / branches. My plant has them along the length of the stems / branches also. Another friend though calothamnus rupestris which does have 'balls' along the branches, but they are 'furry', not 'scaled' as cones as mine are.
