I thought it would be interesting to have a thread for two different types of Sedum carrying the same culitvar name of 'Coral Reef'.
We have had Sedum tetractinum 'Coral Reef' for some time now. A wonderful ground cover type sedum that really does turn a coral color when all conditions are right.
It was brought into the country by Ed Skrocki when he obtained it from a friend in China. It was first offered by Plant Delights in 1997. It is a specie sedum, not a hybrid, it was given the name of Coral Reef for marketing. There is no patent on this plant.

The new sedum is called Sedum telephium 'Coral Reef'. It is an upright sedum growing to approx. 16 inches tall and 10 inches wide.

The new Sedum plant originated from a cross-pollination during the summer of 2005 in Rijpwetering, The Netherlands, of Sedum telephium ‘Purple Emperor’, not patented, as the female, or seed, parent with Sedum telephium ‘Xenox’, disclosed in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 16,888, as the male, or pollen, parent.

I have the original form which I purchased in Canby's Garden Fair this last May. Not a fan of the tall upright sedum but did receive a few members from the "Sparkler" series of Sedum with some very interesting colors.

As I said before I have no idea why they went with the name of coral reef. It has no resemblance to a coral reef. Did they just like the name? Most sedums seem to have a relation to the name.

I have found no explanation for the name. It would be interesting to know why they chose that name.

I am like a dog with a bone. I do not speak Dutch I have to find someone that speaks dutch and see if Coral Reef has some other meaning than an actual coral reef.

I don't think so. I just used Google translate from English to Dutch. Still just Coral Reef.

I was thinking if some one was familiar of the language it could have a different relation. Sort of in Pa we call a Pepsi (Pop) in NJ they call it a (Soda).

If it is released to the US market I wonder if they would change the name. Maybe not since Coral Reef there is no patent.

I wouldn't think they would change the name now that the name is patented for that plant.
I wish we could get a better photo. Wonder if it goes through some color changes that might show a little bit of coral coloring?

The reason I thought maybe a name change is because I have seen it done with Hostas. I do not know if all the plant world operate under the same craziness of Hostas.

I will keep an eye on the Lowes markdown. Since the yellow was never part of their stock maybe they will get this plant. I got some Hydrangea's last year that was not part of their stock, I know how they got those they were from a local farm that did not sale during the summer. So I think they are getting other plants from suppliers that do not sale. Lowes is probably picking them up at an extremely markdown price so they use them for their fire sale area.
