On-Line Applications That I Use for Gardening

By frankrichards16

I am a somewhat pseudo-serious gardener. My major interests are dahlias, daylilies, dwarf conifers, shrubs, and peonies (actually, trees are OK too). However, I am also a computer geek, and because my head is usually in the clouds, I have some favorite on-line applications that I find useful for "whatever" gardening.

I've been wondering how to link to photos! I also use google spreadsheets, both for my business and just to list inventories of plants. I can go back now and add columns for where they are planted, and link to my photos that are gathering dust inside the computer. Blinking
How could all this info be tied into a map program or one of the multi=plant pictures with labels like I see on here?
I am still not sure how to do that, even.
What I really love about google spreadsheets is I can pull it up on either my tablet or my samsung galaxy phone.
That really helps when I'm in a nursery or even out in the yard.
Another great feature of google spreadsheets is sharing with another person. I have pages that are open to our accountant, which saves a lot of time and money. When I get my daylily and iris business up and running, I'll make a google sheet open to anyone who visits my webpage--view only--so that I don't have to email or print sales lists.
That's a great idea to track your weeds. I noticed a new one here this year, and had to look it up. Hopefully I'll remember it next year and won't let it grow to full size again because I think it's something I planted! A photo and a note would help my memory!
I tip my hat to you.

I was having the same issue as Cindi with the pictures - to the point where I was asking my IT husband to write a program that would allow me to picture the plant and use a map to locate it (he opted out, lol ...) .... I think I will just get a pic via Google Earth, put a grid over it and number the spaces. Any other great ideas are welcome!
In the end, only kindness matters.

Science is not the answer, it is the question.

My daughter showed me how to get a screen shot on google earth, paste it on Paint, and use the pen on paint to draw my lines. We were doing that so I could picture where to lay the drip lines. It might work for what you need, Sheryl. My daughter rolled her eyes at me when I asked for help. She said mom, we were doing this in 3rd grade. Come on! I said, well, when I was in third grade, I was super thrilled to have a box of 64 crayons. There WERE NO computers.
I have a great tablet with a camera and a voice recorder, but I still prefer to carry a paper notebook into the garden to make notes. The important notes are later entered into google where I'll never lose them.
