I purchased this iris last year. It was identified as Clear Choice. After posting my photo last night I realized that it was definitely not Clear Choice since the beard was the wrong color and the plant does not have PBF. It resembles Birthday Girl but is not the same. Any other suggestions to investigate? (I know...this one may never get identified, but I thought it's worth a try!)

Yes, I really like it. The flower has nice substance. I'm really bummed that it is now offically a NoID..., but I still like it so it will still have a place in my garden.

If you know the vendor you can send them a picture and see if they can ID it.

I tried going through my records from last year...I couldn't find it, so I think it was a bonus that I did not write down...I've learned to keep better records! So far I have not been able to figure out who sent it...and if it's a bonus they might not want to replace it. Sad

I guess you could search by color on the vendors' websites. That may give you the answer.

Good idea...I'll see what I can find. I'm assuming this is an older cultivar...but I'll have to look closer again next spring.

I thought it looks a lot like a Ghio iris. His have a lot of ruffling. I Googled "Ghio iris" and then clicked on the images button above. I scanned down the page and found Fortunata. The color is good, but the form and year of introduction are off. Way down the page I found Rare Find by Ghio. When I Googled Rare Find, the form was good, but the colors of the pictures were all over the map. That being said, cameras change the color a lot and the orange color in irises is particularly sensitive to soil changes. The most worrisome feature is the little bit of white around the beard in your picture. That doesn't seem to show up in any of the Rare Find photos. The year of introduction is close to Clear Choice and they could have become mixed up. I know that almost never happens with irises :-).

Do you file away your invoices? or have them in emails? Bonuses are usually written in from most growers. The PNW sale was the first invoice I'd received where the bonuses weren't added to the invoice.

I saved most of the paper invoices...but a few seem to be missing. I think some of the eBay sellers I dealt with at the end of the season didn't send invoices (hence the NoID, probably...I have learned to be more selective in my purchases!). I also checked all my online receipts but so far, unless I overlooked it, can't find the one with Clear Choice on it, which is why I think it may have been a bonus, because the online invoices don't list bonuses. When I get time I'll have to go through everything one more time...but I don't think I have any records of it.

I really appreciate the suggestions Sherry, and all the work you did Carl!! Smiling I have to drive up to Modesto today, but I'll check out Rare Find when I get back. I'll let you know if I find anything! Thank You!

Do you know Riley Probst? He has an iris garden in Modesto. He takes more iris pictures a year than any 100 people. He would be a good one to ask.

Here's his info off the AIS Region 14 website:

Thanks Carl! Rob just mentioned him last night. I don't know Riley but you can bet I will look him up! Big Grin I have a Master Gardener friend who has been telling me there is an iris garden in Modesto (where she lives) and I was planning on finding out where it was so I can hopefully visit next spring during the bloom period. Thumbs up I wonder if it's the same person?

Sherry and Rob expressed interest in going on a field trip to see Superstition and Mariposa Iris Gardens next spring. I don't know that we could do it in one day...but maybe I should check into Fluer De Lis Gardens too? Are there any other iris gardens in this general area that anyone knows about? Rolling my eyes.

Carl, in the process of checking my NoID against Rare Find I discovered that I had posted the wrong photo. *Blush* The one I posted was Oh James, a 1995 Blyth introduction.

The one I'm questioning looks a lot more like the photo posted in the database...but the beard looks too dark on mine. When I compared it to the AIS wiki the photo is closer to the color I saw on my plant. The bloom time on my iris is correct, and it has the white line mentioned in the AIS description and it also has the white tip on the beard. I went out and checked the plant more closely and when I move the dirt away from the new shoots there is the tiniest blush of lavender...so it might be PBF after all.

My photo is not very good, so I'll probably have to compare it when it blooms again next year to be sure.

My 'Clear Choice'

AIS Description:

'Clear Choice' (Thomas Johnson, R. 2007). Sdlg. Tw109A. TB, 32" (81 cm), VE. S. peach pink; style arms same, yellow-pink crests; F. peach pink, large white area extending downward; beards tangerine, white tipped coral at end; ruffled, purple based foliage; sweet fragrance; glaciata pattern. 'Lonely Hearts' X T50A: ('Fancy Dress' x 'Progressive Attitude'). Mid-America 2007.

Hybridizer's Comment: Glaciatas with acceptable plant habits have been hard to come by. CLEAR CHOICE overcomes these problems and is beautiful too. Pink standards blend to peach margins. Falls are the same with paler pink patches around light creamy tangerine beards. White center stripes descend from the beards. Styles are darker peach-apricot. With all the rain last year and the year before, CLEAR CHOICE proved to be very rot resistant. Hopefully it will pass this on to its offspring.

For now I'm going to leave it labeled as Clear Choice...I'm open to hearing what anyone else thinks and I apologize for the time some of you spent trying to help me identify the wrong flower! *Blush* I guess the up side, for me at least, is that I would not have learned about Riley Probst, Shirley Trio and the Fluer-De-Lis Iris garden just 35 minutes north of me! Thanks Everyone!! Thank You!

Fleur de Lis also is on Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/group...
Riley has been very kind in helping me try to identify some iris I brought to our meetings... but don't get involved in a bidding war at an Iris auction with Shirley. You *won't* win. Whistling

Yes, Riley and Shirley belong to many of the chapters in central California... and go to most of the meetings for all of them too.
