I dug the iris potatoes today. The Red Poniac out produced the Yukon Gold by far. I had one hill of Yukon Golds that had two very large potatoes, but both were rotten. I've never had that happen before.
These were the potatoes from the best hill of reds

This was the hill with the most uniform reds

Both of the hills with the least were on the ends of the rows.

The most consistent variety I've grown is Caribe. Unfortunately, they are not long keepers, but I never grow enough to worry about long-term storage. I've also had good success with German Butterball. I grow everything in Smartpots, so my yield is probably a little lower.

Except for the few rotten ones, your potatoes look great, Tom. Occasionally, I've had a chipmunk get into my potatoes and chew them up a bit. One even chewed through my Smartpot Angry

Just first tried the German Butterball this year and very happy with them -- very productive, great tasting, and friends that grew them before said they stored well. The plants were huge compared to the russets and Red Gold potatoes that I grew -- but the yields were proportionately large!. Thumbs up

I ordered mine from Gurney's this year -- but since then I've seen them in other seed catalogs as well.

Lol. No, it's a baby Masked Lapwing (Vanellus miles).

Here is mum. Those legs are the baby's legs. She had 4 - now 3 are left.

No Tom. They are very aggressive to strangers and predators. They are aerially adept, vocal and extremely sharp-eyed.
However, once they get to know you they don't attack. This subspecies has that well developed yellow spur on the wing (you can see it in the photo) with which they strike when they dive-bomb. These ones walk the babies through ten properties (only 5 are occupied) and are protected by the owners, whom the birds are quite accepting of (and cross two roads in doing so).
The problem is that when you are young your life it is ruined by your parents. When you are older it is ruined by your children.
