I can't find one that is animated but I would truly love to have a winking emoticon. I found this one.

A wink one would be good. It exhibits cheekiness well.

The problem I see with adding a 'wink' emoticon is that it means different things to different people. Just look up 'what does the wink/winky emoticon mean' on the internet and see the varied answers. Does it mean I find the person attractive? or that I am not serious in what I typed? or what? Too many variables IMHO.

EXACTLY!
In fact I had previously written this (below), and then chose not to "send" because people get so sensitive if views don't mesh with their own. So please, everyone, don't take any of this personally....

There are times when I find a winking emoticon confusing. Sometimes I wonder: if the writer doesn't really mean what he is saying, than what is he saying? If it is an "inside joke", I don't think exclusion of others is what we want to promote here. When used in pros (as opposed to real life) the reasoning isn't always so evident, and it can lead to innuendo. And if the emoticon is so easily available, people will start using it for all kinds of things.

and.... regarding it's use "to exhibit cheekiness",
http://www.merriam-webster.com...
If ever we wanted to open an avenue for unintended hard feelings, this would be it.

I know I am usually in the minority, but that's my 2 cents.

On other sites, I've used the wink to indicate that something is meant humorously or ironically or jokingly.

Wow, I can honestly say this is the first time I have ever totally, 100% agreed with @Leftwood. Yikes.
If the members cannot agree on the meaning of or the need for a particular emoticon, maybe we need to hold off on the wink for a while.
Old or not, we are here to help each other (hopefully mostly about plants) and the winky emoticon maybe should only be used in the sandbox? Shrug!

I wonder why the 'wink' in particular raises this kind of self-scrutiny? Most of the other emoticons are probably also interpreted in various ways by different users.

Probably because the latest generation of techy kids have changed the meaning of this and probably other things we have long taken for granted. Words and actions are all undergoing the changes. Sighing!

We have a great group of members here all communicating with the typed word which can at times be misinterpreted. Sometimes we can even interpret things differently when communicating in person! We just all need to remember that the *smilies* are for fun and think twice before interpreting one as a negative because more than likely it is not meant that way. Group hug

Interesting, isn't it -- that emoticons, which are more or less intended to help convey the meaning of the typed message (where we can't see the speaker's facial expression), can still cause a controversy!! Rolling my eyes.
