Phil bip is NOT dead! So happy! A 2nd leaf is unfurling. I got anxious and ripped off the petiole. Is that a good idea? IDK but I wanted to do it.

Yes, I'm having all kinds of trouble today, answering questions that weren't asked, forgetting pics while posting, throwing cycads into the palms, and now this. Thank you very much for noticing that!

starams5 said: Hi,

I'm new to Philodendrons, coming up on a year now. Most of my plants in this catagory are very young but I'll share them anyways. My Philodendron Giganteum was purchased March of 2022 (starter), Congo Rojo April of 2022 (Starter), Selloum July of 2022, and Maximum Dec of 2022 (Starter). The Giganteum is doing okay, Congo Rojo slow motion, Selloum had some issues but is rebounding and doing well, and the Maximum is growing since purchase two months ago.

Oh, I love Congo Rojo! I lost mine in last year's freeze and I miss it.
I have found that coffee, tea, and rose can all agree on one thing... water everyday.

Hi Gina, glad you're still around, I haven't posted in a while. My Rojo is grown indoors, you say water every day? I moved into this apt about two years ago and natural lighting isn't as good as my old place. We just went solar so I'm putting more lighting up that has been stored for a while, one being a 15k Lumen LED High Bay Light. The Rojo and other plants are already responding to it.

Thank you, Sherri! I'm thrilled! That's way better than trying to find a place for it in a pot inside. I have way too many divas like that already and the first couple winters, I did bring that in and it got spider mites both times. If it needs a rest when there's a really weird winter sometimes but it grows back, that's fine. It was evergreen for many winters before that cruel and unusual freeze.

Phil emerges triumphantly in the former parking spot-turned-garden. You can see all of the dead leaves below - and a couple spiderwort that I evicted from a yard pot and tossed over there to be part of the mulch. To the R, Phil's twin is coming up too. When I grounded these plants, the one to the right was a smaller offset that I mangled a bit more than I'd hoped separating the two.

Not fond of the name philโ€ฆ reminds of that knucklehead on tv. Rolling on the floor laughing
Maybe the name philo but spell check doesn't like it.
Fond of the huge leaves that will last forever when removed from the plant. Just plop in water with a fav vase . Add a flower or colored leaf or ' ?' of your choice. A simple lil trick to lift our spirits thru slow growing seasons.
More than one way to display tropicals when a garden zone doesn't fit the plants growing conditions. Just plop one in a pot in the zonal-challenged garden for a beautiful display ,pick up bring inside during colder months. Many tropicals are used this way in gardens and floral arrangements. Leaves available thru florists. Even useful to place sections of the leaf on slightly damp sterile soil, pin tightly down to the surface and in a few weeks tiny lil roots will grow for the next season.

Not at all, it's a great idea! Whenever temps that low come around again, I would like to save at least a couple leaves ...for just a bit longer, however long they can manage.

There are so many knuckleheads on TV, if all of their names are off limits for plants, we'll have to stick to their real names. Hahaha!

Congrats on you new little Phil, Tiffany. I call my huge Philodendrons Phil also, I have Mr. Phil, Mrs. Phil and baby Phil.

Oh and I call my husband Phil, he's a sweet guy, a goofball sometimes Grin

You can see baby Phil over by the trellis in this photo, it came up from the huge crawling stem of Mrs. Phil.

What a beautiful spot! I love everything, and especially that cute little turtle statue!

I will probably only ever have a baby Phil here. Maybe I'll turn a trash can over it the next time there's a deep freeze like that. Worth a try but if it's not completely killed, I don't mind losing the past few years' leaves once in a while.

Thank you Gina, I just cleaned that bromeliad garden out.

Tiffany a turned trash can has saved many of my plants from freezing, at least it comes back for you.
My baby Phil I'm hoping to fill in the sunny place, because Mr. Phil fell in a hurricane a few years ago and will need to be removed since it is growing over the pathway and into the shed. Mrs. Phil is the big one in the photo, she is propped up by some driftwood, with the red fireball bromeliad growing on it.

Philodendron Campii, after I took the photo I noticed the Lubber grasshopper on it, they're really bad this year.
P. Birkin in front, starting some new leaves. Some older leaves damaged from hurricanes.
