Don't Throw Out Those Pelargoniums at the End of the Season!

Storksbill geraniums (Pelargoniums) are a beloved staple in summer containers and landscaping. Every fall most of the summer's selections end up being tossed out, or composted, without a second thought. What you might not know is that Pelargoniums are simple to overwinter, and not as houseplants that require care!

Great article! I first started putting geraniums in our crawl space when we lived in OH. In spring, I would go down to get them and they were starting new growth. I didn't know if it was magic or a miracle. Green Grin!

Geraniums are wonderful in that they bloom reliably from spring to first frost. I have several and have grown them all from seed.

I just leave them in their pots and add soil in the spring. Some of them are 14 years old.

I, too, discovered that geraniums can be saved!
Here in Idaho, I simply cut them back a bit and store them in the unheated garage close to the window, watering them about once a month until spring. Repot or just add new soil...it works! The wimpy-looking ones were planted in the ground last spring and surprised me by producing a plant 3 times as big as it was in the fall. We haven't had a hard frost yet, so I need to rescue them from the elements soon.
