Well system secret is twofold Evan.
We usually 'pot' the bigger Aroids in 1/2 55 gallon drums. Heavy in compost and humus + 1/2 topsoil.
Basically like planting them in the yard.
BUT come mid Autumn we downsize them to more manageable (read able to carry up stairs...lol!) 12-15" plastic pots.
Many of our Aroids, especially the larger ones we just bare root thru the winter.
Basically just throw them down on the GH floor.
Macro, Odora, etc do well this way.
Haven't stored rhizomes in sawdust, shavings, etc in 10 years.
We had too much rot that way.

Charleen in the house in the winter it is definitely an attention getter.
Now that we know how tough it really is I'll be more inclined to take chances w/ it new Summer.

What zone are you Ric? Here I use early/mid-October as my reminder date for killing frost/lifting tender "bulbs". I lift after the frost knocks them down with good success. In my case would your experiences translate into re-potting or "tossing on the floor" late Sept/early Oct.?

P.S. I posted a pic a while back of a Xanth w/out leaves which I was accusing rabbits of munching on. I THINK it was you who said you'd never experienced rabbits munching on an EEar. You were right! I moved it into a shadier spot and the leaf loss stopped. If it wasn't you I'll just have to keep searching for that post.

Nancy,
Yes, the plant is in south Florida; I really wish I knew how it is doing today. Seems that the big Alocasias benefit from exposure to some sun. I have big ones like the Borneo Giant in full sun and they have 5 foot or taller trunks on them!

Yep it was me on the Aroid/Rabbits.
GLAD you got it sorted out.
I'm in a River Micro-climate here in our area of Cincy.
We should be Zone 6b but we routinely winter 7a and some 7b w/ help.
