What Is a Keiki?

Keiki is a Hawaiian word for "child." In the plant world, it is actually a clone of the parent plant. This term is often used in orchid propagation.

Wow, great information! I have one orchid that was gifted to me in bloom, if it ever has baby sprouts I'll know what to do.

Judy - Thank you! I only have a few orchids myself and was not sure what was going on, but I suspected that it was propagations of the original plant. I learned a new term, "Keiki" in the process and now have 3 plants instead of 1. The Orchid Forum folks are VERY helpful! Thumbs up

While I do not grow orchids, I love learning about propagation! Thanks for an informative article

Jennifer - I have to admit that these keikies were the easiest propagation I've ever done! LOL! I grow many plants from seeds and some from cuttings .... but I wasn't even trying to propagate any of the few orchids I have. This was a surprise I wasn't expecting.
