They were purchased in St Louis from a shop called The Bug House which is situated next to Mobot (Missouri Botanical Gardens).
I believe they're based on a type of lattice design used by the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright.
If I've time, I'll look for a shot of that store, lots of trellis' and neat stuff.

I reread this thread before posting and noted the comment on trellis stabilization due to wind. When fully grown out, these pots could fall prey to the wind. They fill out so much they mimic a sail. To counter that problem, once the shoots are poked up and a ground cover added, I load the pots with heavy rocks, often non-hollow geodes or glacial erractics.
Sometimes I surround the base with double size red bricks (like the above pots sit on for drainage). Where I worked, the building was expanded, once the exterior bricks were up, the remainder (nearly a pallet's worth) were dumped in one of those large dump bins. When I got off the clock I retrieved them, loaded the SUV and took em home.
