I'd like to see a mature stem of the second one. How does such a smooth warm colour come from two parents with such strong contrast markings?

As I understand it, Silk Road as a pod parent does not throw marked seedlings. The pollen parent of SR is described (by Judith Freeman) as a "soft yellow trumpet". I hope to study what future generations will bring. While I didn't use either of these seedlings as pod parents this year I did spread their pollen around.

ooh... I never knew that. Is that the plant equivalent of a sex-linked gene? Makes Silk Road a really interesting and useful subject for studying inheritance, doesn't it? I guess Judith is already familiar with the way SR breeds, but doing your own crosses is too much fun to not experiment.

I'm afraid I don't know squat about genetics so can't help on the sex linked thing. Judith describes the relationships of SR and its parents in the 2010 NALS yearbook.

Connie, I agree that last winter was a tough one. Lost about half of my new OT seedlings that were planted out November of 2013. Usually have some snow cover before the cold gets here, but not last winter. Very cold early, then lots of snow fell late and just kept saturating the ground in spring.

It's always nice to see the new seedlings when they flower for the first time ! Nice pix.

Just 25 miles south of here the snow fell for 2 days straight in a narrow band and buried the area under 6 to 8 feet of snow, and that does not include the height of the drifts). I have all of 4 inches. Now a warm front is moving in with rain and over 60 deg F. I got behind and still have pots of seedlings indoors waiting to be planted outside. Think I might be too late this year.

Nice seedling photos and information. The genetic data I will likely never keep straight. Always neat to throw pollen around and see what traits come forth. Pretty offspring! Survivors!!

No worries, Connie. It's really not so simple, is it? I guess you were lucky to get an SR seedling that favoured the yellow trumpet grandparent. Just looking at Hank's seedlings... fantastic info. I'd been wondering about the differences in how Silk Road and Northern Carillon breed. (And I much prefer your results from your own pollen, Hank. I know it's nigh on blasphemy to say it... but I've never liked the Griesbach tetras, whether Trumpet or OT. They all look so coarse....) (and editing hahahah - the gremlin has struck! I can't format with paragraphs again!)

I believe I heard about SR not throwing marked offspring from someone on the yahoo group, also just my observation from offerings in the exchange. I don't plan on doing much with SR. However, I have always found it difficult to walk past it if I happen to have some anthers in my hand.

Della, I agree with you about the Griesbach 4ns and your description describes them well. One of my major disappointments. Almost all of my 4n seedlings from Sims' seeds turned out pretty nice. Glad I still have a store of his seeds in my freezer.

Wow very suprised to hear the negative talk on Griesbachs stuff. From what I read, he was kind if a pioneer with the tetra stuff.

Joe, we really aren't dissing his stuff... but I think what we are really talking about here are unselected seedlings either from the exchange or purchased bulbs.

Hmm... it was around 10 years ago that I first tried some seed from the exchange - yellow and apricot 4n trumpets - didn't impress and I wondered what the fuss was about.

I thought I was the only one who didn't appreciate something I couldn't see.

I also started some Sims' seed about the same time, but asiatics and western north americans only. Wish I'd given his tetras a go - I might have cottoned onto breeding with tetras much sooner.

I hope my Silk Road scale bulblets are going to grow up soon. I want to try for myself how much of a pollen magnet they are!

Two of Griesbach's named cultivars that I do grow and like are Northern Dazzle and Northern Delight. They each have a decent inflorescence and loads of blooms. They did get a good smacking of pollen this past summer. In a few years I hope to see what these seedlings look like.

Who is Sims? Has he passed away? Haven't really heard of him before.

David Sims... he used to sell seeds from his own hand pollinations. I'm sure he is alive and well. I think his last seed list was in 2005.

He's been very active with the NALS for some time. He was editor of the yearbook for a few years back around 2005, has served on the board of directors a number of years and I think currently helps out with seed program--the sales and collection portion. He also is the webmaster for the NALS internet sites. His wife Stephanie, is currently executive secretary of the NALS. The live in Bonners Ferry, Idaho.

Wow I feel dumb! I didn't even put two and two together with Stephanie Sims. I am assuming he doesn't sell seed anymore? It's a shame as Connie's S-2 is very nice!
