The other color of my purslanes. I guess I'll just call it Pink, not Rose.

Well, I wonder why it's not sold earlier where you live. It should be. We had a mild freeze forecast, but it didn't happen. Although mid-March is when it's usually safe to put tomatos (and other things) in the ground here, you never know...freezes could happen. Anyway, I brought the purslanes in, just so they could keep blooming. So today they'll go back out.

Just discovered you purslane folks. Discovered this plant last year from garden center, an orange blooming variety that did well on my deck. Noticd that it reseeded mid summer in a pot next door so I collected seed and started some last week. Very good germination and have seedlings in pot on deck already. I saw somewhere on here someome asked about growing from seed, well so far so good. It will probably be a few weeks before I get blooms but I'll post pix.

That is so cool you were able to save and re-seed. I have to buy my purslane which they sell here this time of year. I was able to overwinter one plant.

Looking forward to your photos Hurray! Hurray!

I've just gotten into seed saving and my motto is "try it," maybe the seedlings won't be exactly like the parents but it's so fun to see what you get. And sometimes they look exactly like the parent. Purslane seeds are tiny like poppy seeds; when the flower fals off it leaves a little green nub, when the nub starts to turn a slightly yellowish then hold a cup under it and rub the nub. The top will pop off and seeds trickle out. If you don't get them in Time they pop and spread seeds themselves.

Mine reseeded in the ground nicely and each spring they would begin showing their heads. However, when I have tried them in pots, I had no luck. I hope you do, Judy!!!!

The way I got the purslane to germinate: sprinkled seeds on top of soil in a pot, set the dogs water dish on top to create a moist protected space, then after 5-7 days peeked in and they were sprouting, took off the dish and now they are growing. About 10 days old and getting their first true leaves. Temps have been warm ish but unpredictable. I think once it starts to stay warm in a week or two they will really take off. I need to thin out, see if I can transplant some to other pots.

Lol. Surely I'm not the only one to grow purslane from seed? It was reseeding itself in neighboring pots last summer so it requires zero Effort. Maybe I have a non hybrid plant that is very fertile. Gave away all my extras on the hog wild piggy swap over the winter, tho.

Last summer I collected seeds from my hybrid purslane in hopes of growing my own plants this year. Collecting wasn't easy since you have to time it right or you've lost the seeds. But the collected seeds germinated and I've planted them outside They haven't bloomed yet so I don't know if they'll revert to something less pretty.
I sowed the purlsane seed pretty much the same way you would portulaca seeds.
