You can make a birdhouse in two minutes or less from an empty one-gallon water jug or a discarded flower pot.

Isn't that hole WAY too large? Will let any quantity of predators in. Crows, snakes, racoons.....

Great idea, Kim! I have a few birdhouses and enjoy seeing the Carolina chickadee's nest in them. I don't know if the hole is too big or not, but we have had a snake climb up the 6-foot pole and get into our birdhouse that only has an opening of about 1-1/2".

Marcia... You can adjust the size of the hole if you need to. I have mine under my awning of my house so predators would have a really hard time getting to them... so far so good. We really don't have too many snakes etc. here. The only thing I have to deal with is I have occasionally had wasps build nests in them after the birds leave. I just take the jug down and throw it way in that case.

TY Vickie... a snake would have to crawl up the side of my house and across the supports of my awing to get into ours... not saying one couldn't if it really had the desire though!! LOL
I hate losing plants....I know they are "just plants" but when you nurse them along and baby them and get them to grow, bloom, and be pretty and they die....it's like losing a friend..... Crying

I wonder how this would do for Purple Martins? Probably too thin.

I would advise using a soldering iron to melt small holes in the bottom in case of rain getting in. Drain holes would also provide better air flow (especially in the warmer climates).

Good idea Becky. Mine are under the awing of my house so no need for rain/wind protection for me but a good idea for others.....I have also left the lid of the jug off for air flow also.....
