I got some small, but nice own-root roses from High Country Roses this spring. They all did very well this summer and are looking to be in good shape for their first winter--we shall see.
I'm trying a grand experiment to see if I can avoid digging out Dr. Huey...and none of my dead critters are planted under them...

Here's a pic of my grave garden where they are planted--arguably one of my favorite photos of the summer--there is a rose off to the left out of view (The Fairy) Hilarious! does that count?

The good people at Pickering hope to be selling roses again in 2016, according to their website. Export fees and laws change from time to time, so we can hope that the situation improves for them. I sure hope Palatine continues to ship to the U.S. so reasonably, as they are the best growers anywhere!

I'm glad Pickering will survive, but I'm sorry to hear their plan for the future:

"We hope to have a small, core selection of rooted cuttings available in the spring of 2016."

After Palatine stopped carrying David Austin roses, I ordered them from Pickering, but I don't want "rooted cuttings" of David Austin roses.

Zuzu, have you noticed Regan's "own root, bare root" offerings? I'm guessing if it can be sent bare root, it must be a sizable plant?

I'm sure you're right, Neal. There's no way a rose from Sequoia or Vintage Gardens, for instance, could have been sent through the mail bare root, so these must be older and bigger.

I feel like that's also a good indication that the specific variety will grow a strong root system. Rooted cuttings are such a gamble.

It seems they would be likely to grow well on their own roots, especially because most of Regan's own-root offerings are landscape shrubs, but I wonder about some of the others. They sell Black Baccara own root, for example, and that's a temperamental rose even when it's grafted.
