I get a bit confused with some of the divisions in our Hens and Chicks groupings.

JoAnn's wonderful banner 12/9/14 made me wonder how this group differs and is unique about the calcareum?

It is all about color and texture for calcareum. They all have varying shades of green with dark colored tips.

I think this would be a great thing to explain in your book Kevin. What are the differences between S. calcareum and S. tectorum?

The ' is really pretty isn't it? A Bit different from the other red and green ones, but I like it very much. Does anyone have this one here in the states?

I don't find any for sale in the U.S. Marilyn. It sure is different, and very interesting.

I'm not sure that Tristesse is a calcareum...it doesn't have the usual coloration or shape. Marilyn my understanding is that it has to do with where these different semps were/are found, and the looks.

The species S. calcareum are found growing on limestone.

oh okay, wow yes that's a calcareum, what lovely coloration it goes through!!

It is so different from all the others I've seen. Very interesting, wish we had it here in the U.S.

I have 'Tristesse' and it's lovely but not a calcareum. Mine came from Fernwood and is finally making a nice clump. Think it should be an interesting parent as it has such an unusual blend of colors.

The tectorums are mostly tetraploid and are generally bigger rosettes. The calcareums are diploids and grow mainly on calcareous soil in the wild although I don't find that they mind my acid soil here either. The blossoms on calcareums are nearly white, just a touch of pink at the base of the petal. They flower infrequently for me although they did better in MA.

My favorite calcareums are 'Extra' and from Ceuse. Both quite different.

OK back to book proofing... This is the worst part of publishing a book! Am sure the neighbors think I'm crazy as i'm reading my prose OUT LOUD to try and catch mistakes. It's 192 pages long so a lot of reading.

WINDY here but the power has stayed on. My new patio furniture went flying across the yard but I retrieved it next to the deer fence!

Everything seems OK in Salem, or at least my end that is more protected by the Salem Hills. Today seems very nice.

Yesterday after finishing the chapter on Japanese irises and saying Japanese names OUT LOUD I finished and broke into "Let It Go" from "Frozen" in my very non-Elsa voice. Luckily the wind was blowing a gale and all the windows were closed so hopefully no one heard that rendition!

OK back to reading my prose!

The trick with proofreading (and I've done a lot of it) is to walk away every couple of hours and come back to it after a short break. The expression "fresh eyes" isn't as silly as it sounds.

Yes I'm trying to do more than 10 pages at any one time, do another task (like check this site!). this afternoon I took off a couple hours to clean out a bed of Siberian irises. I find my best proofing is done late at night when I'm ready for bed. Things pop out of the page then!

Bev, the reason I play a musical instrument is that I have a VERY low voice and only about an octave range. I did belt out Let It Go pretty well but I was feeling a need for "pressure relief"
