It's that time of year again and the annual volkswalk has come and gone. I again volunteered for trail cleanup except this time it was for the 10k route (6.2 miles).

Our volkswalk club made use of the peony fields to adjust the total distance to 10k. I was told that the length of a row was 1/2k so the trail went up and down rows to adjust the distance, with most of the route out on country roads.

I did not take my camera out with me because of the task at hand (collecting stakes, flagging and distance markers, and of course massive bs-ing with my co-helpers). But I stayed late and took a few pictures in the display gardens. Like the irises, the peonies were running late this year, but there was still plenty to see and many still in bud.

I'll start with some views of the display garden.

I must say it just seemed kind of weird because this is all in the Adelman's backyard LOL! Just imagine having a bunch of people wandering around your yard when the peonies are blooming!

There are a lot of companion plants in the display garden. Here are some irises, heuchera and delphiniums. Right in their backyard, as you can see.

Photography was a bit of a challenge as a constant wind had those balls of peonies waving to and fro.

Just before leaving I went to buy a few stems of peonies but instead was handed a bunch of five for free. The Adelman's gave each of the walk volunteers a peony bouquet! Now how sweet is that to end the day on!

Very nice, Pard. Smiling I've only met them once and that was last year at the APS convention when it was in Janesville, but they were very sweet people. :)

Thank you so much for posting the pictures, if you have any more stashed on your camera, please post them too when you get the chance. Smiling

I just took my bouquet outside to photograph it. These blooms are HUGE and were only in colored bud Saturday. This called for digging out my heavy lead crystal vase as these would tip over any of my other large vases Hilarious!

The reds all look like they are the same cultivar and are quite dark colored.

I hope to go back up there this week if the weather holds out. Not to Adelman's but to Sebright Hosta Gardens and Mid America Iris Gardens. I really want to get photos there!

You're awesome! 'Garden Treasure' is one that I thought was so close to 'Bartzella' that I didn't see the reason to duplicate....until I saw it in person last year at the APS convention. Wow was it gorgeous.

Some of the peonies definitely look familiar, like 'Red Charm'. Wish I could have taken that walk with ya Connie. What fun!

I have to tell ya my camera/lack of photo skills come no where near to doing these flowers justice. It is simply breathtaking to go and see them growing in person.

I found this slide show of photos from the peony walk on my club's web site. More views of peonies and other stretches of the walk. Next year I will definitely walk with my camera because there is lots of beauty along the roadsides. The walk is the last on the webpage, at the bottom. Browsing this page I think I need to do that Columbia Gorge walk too.

What a pretty pictorial tour. Also love that rain frosty picture with the huge tree and mosses on it. Ahhhh, the rainforests!

You can phone or email them and ask. Contact info is on their website. I didn't see anything on there about closeout sales.

Now that is good to know. I would think the plants would be in better condition then. We are having a hot and dry summer (normal) but it started late and is running later.

I could not wait for spring to buy my peonies from Adelman's. I ordered 4 varieties and I am very pleased with them. Thanks for introducing me to one of the best peony sellers around.

I have bought peonies from Adelman's and always been pleased. but I was looking at another site, D'Aoust, and in one of her articles she commented "A good division will have a good balance between crown material and tuberous roots. A large hunk of crown covered with buds but with just one tuberous root is going to have a tough time growing." And that rather describes the tubers I get from Adelman's, for the most part. All I can figure is that perhaps it is way of having more to go around rather than selling clumps. Reath's always sends clumps or at least what appears to be clumps. 'Tis a puzzlement. Comments.
