Last year I bought a couple of six packs of lobelia - the low, spreading kind. Don't know the specific name. Anyway, they did great all summer. I do remember cutting them back once, and they bounced right back. And the big bonus is they do great in the shade! And the deer don't eat them! Yay!

I love lobelia and grow dozens of them every year, mostly the dark blue Crystal Palace. I tried a pale blue one this last year and really like it, too. That and Snow Crystals Alyssum get tucked in just about everywhere. Another little filler that I love is the Pink Baby's Breath, Gypsophila muralis.

The blues of Lobelias are so gorgeous, and I love blues with most any other color. I wish annual Lobelia performed better here, its pretty in spring but melts when summer heat and humidity arrive. I haven't grown Baby's Breath for many years, I need to introduce some to this garden. Does the pink show as pink from a distance? I've always been curious about it.

I guess that depends on how far a distance. Smiling I'll take a look and see if I have any good photos. It does tend to reseed itself.

Well, rats. No good photos. It doesn't get really big, it forms more of a low clump, maybe a foot tall, but it's just covered in tiny pink flowers. This is a not very good picture of a small clump growing next to some Hula Hoop petunias and blue pimpernels. It looked really pretty, next to an Angel Face rose, but the lighting was never right to get a good photo.

Yeah, I grew them for the first (but definitely NOT the last) time last year. Really an intense blue.

Same story with lobelia here, Neal. Big time melt when the heat arrives so I no longer use them.

Oooohhh, those pink Baby's Breath are lovely! Is it a self seeding annual? Years ago I grew the white perennial Gyp.

The white one we grew got so huge! It took multiple bags to send the extra growth to the dump. I did keep the plants though I heard they're very difficult, if not impossible, to move successfully. I took this photo after I hacked the plant back after trying fencing and many stakes to try to contain it.

Wow! Its very interesting seeing one positioned alone like that- I would never have thought of it, but I really like it! It reminds me of a wedding I did last year using all Baby's Breath- big, full clouds of it everywhere. It was quite lovely.

Oh, the little pink ones are nowhere near that big. I think there are two or three types of baby's breath; I've only ever grown the annual types. The pink ones I have are small and well mannered, but they will sprinkle themselves about.

An accent plant that I've grown to love is Purple Toad Flax, Linaria purpurea. The dainty blooms and airy foliage mingle easily among other plants. They've been perennial for me, and self seed lightly here and there.

I planted Linaria "Enchantment" a couple of years and I still find them popping up here and there. They're very cute!

I haven't tried, but I think I still have some seed. I'll try to remember to make sure to plant some where I can harvest the seeds. Smiling
