Saw this at Selby, magnificent. But no name plate! Any ideas? I'm guessing some sort of Licuala but which one?

I agree, I have one and that is the name that came on it, Licuala Grandis. Mine was doing ok until I decided to put it in the ground in the back and it is struggling now. I need to move it again.

Yes, where it was before was full shade and really low light in the summer when the sun was directly overhead. In the winter it did better as the slant got more sunlight into that terrace. But, I thought it would get more light in the ground, no direct sun but perhaps not even enough light. A macho fern and some spiral ginger are doing ok in that location so you'd think it would be all right. It might be the soil or the insects. I've about decided that everything back there has to stay in a pot.

Yes, this palm was HUGE, and was in moderate to full, dark shade. There was only a small opening in the canopy above it, and its entire trunk was completely covered by the other plants in the picture. It looked very happy with its situation.

The Ruffled Fan Palm is short in stature compared to other palm trees but those leaves are huge and I just love their fan shape. I wish they would grow in my zone but unfortunately we have frost and freezes on occasion where I live. Sad

I love Selby Gardens but it's been a long time since I've been to the Sarasota area. I hope to get over to the west coast in the not too distant future and they are at the top of my list of places to visit. I could spend hours just walking around that property!

Hetty, Thumbs up
We used to pass by Naples 40+ years ago as we'd be heading from St. Petersburg to Miami to visit family but we never had time to stop ... some day I hope to be able to visit the Botanical Gardens there in Naples!

I would love to live in a more tropical climate. however i don't like the services down south so i must live in the north. where i cant grow houseplants outdoors year round. i try to make the best of it though. i garden at a community garden and enjoy it allot.

From what I'm told people in the disabilities community mirgrate from states like florida/texas because the health and human services are much much worse then here in the north. my dad told me of a tv show that aired in bamidji recently about autism where in some states schools wont even have the kids go to scool because of the disability or if they do go to school there's very few staff/services they can have acess to. therefore its best i stay here in mn. i'm not a kid but theres other more complex things that could happen should i move to a warmer climate.

my family lives in bamidji and i like it here, even if its cold.

I think services are good some places and bad in others across all parts of the US. I live in South FL Manatee County and my son goes to a very highly rated and fabulous public school, & my family doctor is the best I've ever had. I'm much happier than I was in Northern VA with the health/human services here.
