Treated myself to another 'rescue' from Trader Joe's on New Years Eve, a noid Onc of some sort, with almost black petals/tepals and a velvety dark red lip. The flowers are certainly a little the worse for wear, having lived in the a/c at the store for at least a few days but . . .

mellielong said:Melissa, when I was reading about your Onc. Gold Dust, I thought I had that one, too but today I went out to the shade house and confirmed it. It looks like we have the same taste in Oncidiums! Mine hasn't bloomed as I bought it quite small. It was at St. Pete Orchid Farm and they had a sample plant and then lots of little ones to buy. Yours looks fabulous and I'm glad I can see what the heck it was I bought!

Here is the Onc Gold Dust when it was in great shape. 2011 blooms

The Gold Dust looks adorable on that raft! Lovey dubby

Elaine, those Orchids at Trader Joe's are very tempting at times. Surely the next blooming will be fine!

Ken, what a wonderful thing to come home to! Sounds like your trip to So. Fl. was enjoyable, and possibly profitable for your business in the future... Sorry 'bout the bowl loss!
'Emerald Isle' and Mary Jo McNerney look so much alike! They are beautiful! Is there a parentage similarity? Fragrance similarity?

Glad that you had a safe trip home!

Tara, the three blooms in the forefront are 'Emerald Isle'. Mary Jo is the single bloom in the background. Totally different color, size, and fragrance.

Until I have my second cup of java, everything is out of focus! Whistling Of course, without my glasses, no amount of coffee would help. Sighing!

You will not only love the size/color of your 'Emerald Isle', you will also love the heady fragrance. Mary Jo has a light fragrance, but when you put that flower along-side the 'Emerald Isle' flower, you don't even notice Mary Jo's fragrance.

Some more stuff in bloom today -
This Cattleya Nancy Off 'Linwood's AM/AOS ( '1010' ) came from Waldor Orchids a couple of years ago and it is growing nicely, as I would expect from a Waldor - Orchid.
The third pics shows the reason most larger Cattleyas in my care need to hang from a bar.

And another preview - the Schomburgkia superbiens has another one and a half spikes to go. I find it grows best bare root in a clay pot for me. Full sun here in NJ and daily waterings.

That is an amazing, healthy Catt with beautiful 'legs' there, Ursula. Nice floof too.

My big 'sunset' noid Catt is outgrowing its pot, and will surely end up in a big square basket like that. I am contemplating just breaking off the bottom of the pot with a hammer, and setting the whole thing into a new basket so that it can continue to make roots in all directions. Sad about the nice pot, though.

Roberta, the next open house at Silva is from Jan 23. to Jan 25. I always go to that one!

Elaine, I wouldn't hesitate to either dislodge that plant from its pot or smashing it. If you wait a bit longer, you can just hang it up as is....?

It's really got a death grip on that pot, Ursula. It would lose a lot of nice roots if I tried to dislodge it. I think smashing the bottom off the pot is my best option, since I doubt there's a lot of roots in the bottom part of the pot anyway. It's really too heavy to hang it as it is. It will lose a few pounds if I can take the bottom off the pot.

But I'll wait at least one more bloom cycle to do the deed. It's a little late, but just starting to put out the first of 3 big fat spikes Hurray!

Just as an aside, this is a classic case of a beginner mess up that came out all right . . . I bought this orchid over 3 years ago, a small plant in a 5in. plastic pot, and with one nice flower on it. I re-potted it in my newbie zeal in that great big pot, just because I really liked the pot. The plant grew and grew for 2 years before it put up another flower. Way overpotted, obviously. But now - I have this great specimen-sized plant that blooms like crazy at least twice a year, three times last year! Sometimes you blunder into success through the back door, right?

Why not put pot-and-all in the basket?

Yep, three different kinds of ferns in there with that big fella. They just love it in there, and truly, I've tried to weed 'em out, too!

I don't know about the Beginner mess up. Pretty much any standard Cattleya will grow eventually over the edge of the pot. And when it does, it usually flowers the best. They are epiphytes after all.

Well as usual you guys are putting on a great show of Orchid Eye Candy.

Melissa, you Onc Gold Dust is adorable. I've said I was not going to get any more Orchids, but if I ran across that one I'd have to bring it home.

I've got a few blooming.

Terete Vanda Diana, love this, grows in Full Florida sun, put it on a stick, hang it up. Most work involved in making sure to remember to run the hose over it if we don't get rain.
