there are many palmtree-leaves on the ground especially after a jewish festival "succoth" is there anything i could do creatively with them?can they be good soil-holders for a home made hanging basket for plants?

Yes, David, that's a good idea!

Here in Savannah, Georgia the local craftspeople make roses from the palm leaves and sell them to tourists. Some also make small backets. I have watched them work. They can carry on a conversation while their hands are busy weaving the leaves into a shape.

If you use Google (or another search engine) use the keywords 'how to weave a palm leaf basket' and there are instructions available.

David, they do make nice baskets, but if you want it to hold soil for more than a year or two, use a couple of layers of palm leaves. Like anything natural, they will rot quickly if kept moist. I can't use them here even for my orchids, which are very light and have very open medium, not soil. The humidity, and heavy rain in summer just rots them in one season.

You come out one day and your plant has fallen through the bottom of the basket . . . They would last better in your dry climate, though.
