Got this plant in a trade, suppose it's a hybrid. Would like to know which Iris. It does set seed.

Hi Jonna,

I am not versed in Iris and Pictures are not my forte, but here goes...since it was in a swap and possibly a hybrid, are you looking for the possible species? It appears to be Iris germanica, considered to be the grand parent of most bearded irises.

Guessing at the height, maybe Iris pumila, a bearded dwarf iris?

It's definitely a hybrid, there aren't any wild species that look quite like that. If it's a named cultivar, it would be in the Standard Dwarf Bearded Iris class. But, identification of the correct cultivar is going to be very difficult. There are many named SDBs that look roughly similar. Based on the form, it's probably an older variety, pre-2000 at least.

Thank you Jean and Kent.
How about sowing the seeds? Any idea how they will look like?

Most welcome, Jonna.
As for looks, if you have the space and the patience you may well end up with some real beauties. Since your plant is probably a hybrid, Chances are high that they may revert to what the parent plants looked like, rather than the plant seeds were collected from. You could also get some interesting offspring. And that is about as much as I can safely say on the subject. Sighing!

But, I did find some info for you on crossing bearded Irises, that you may find interesting.

What you'll get depends on where the pollen came from. Do you have other irises nearby? If it is self pollinated, the seedlings will probably mostly resemble the parent. But, you never know. Shrug!

My blog shows a tiny example of the range of colors you might get from SDB seedlings:

Thank you Jean and Kent. I think I will try to germinate some. I love Iris.
