This picture is of the damage a microscopic wasp does. It plants it's eggs in the small caterpillars and then when the caterpillar forms the chrysalis the larva of the wasp emerges.

I didn't have my camera handy, but I was checking on some caterpillars that I had seen on my passion vine at the front and saw a wasp pick an adult cat off the vine and sting it, causing it to fall to the ground. I don't know if it was going to eat it there or taking it back to it's nest, but it was it's last meal.

Shade Cloth screen thrown over the host plants works for me. Need to release the adults every day to fly away. The monarch crysalises seem to be safe from attack.

Here is a chrysalis with a hole in it. It is the exit hole from the predators that I found flying around in a cube cage. They lay eggs in the caterpillar and then mature when it makes a chrysalis, keeping the butterfly from forming.

Since it was in a cage I was able to kill the culprits...thus saving countless other butterflies!!
Farmers buy these and release them to control caterpillars on their crops...BUT hello...they don't stay there!!

I hate when that happens!!! It's rough raising a butterfly from an egg only to find out it was parasitized from the get go.

One thing that aggravates me about the wasps...besides what they do to butterfly cats...is that they are constantly drinking water from the containers of water I set out for wildlife and such. Most wasps never seem to drown and have no problem taking off after being on the top of the water. But I've seen one kind of wasp that does drown from time to time. I just wonder why wasps need that much water...they're doing that all day long in the summer!

Wasps eat dry wood and then need water to create their paper mash'e for their paper nests. Mud daubers stuff their nests with caterpillars too. I consider them balance of nature, but they make life difficult for us worm-lovers. This one was caught in the kiddy pool trying to get a drink

We have sprayed three more wasps nest this week. Hopefully it will help my caterpillar count increase. Even the Gulf Frits are at a all time low.

The GFs have decimated the Blue Passionflower vine. Maypop is still going strong. But I see almost no cats...heat? I still have a few cute little Spicebush Swallowtail cats...wonder if the few leaves left will get them to pupation...they're in the screened enclosed cage, but of course, that's not completely protected...one day I found a wasp that had somehow gotten in there...made me really mad!

I think the excessive heat up north may be keeping them there longer. I know I have heard Monarchs don't migrate until temps are 51. I am just afraid they will become trapped by the onset of cold weather.
As for the GFs, it is the wasps and lizards that have been getting them here I think. I hadn't seen many until after a neighbor had someone spray nests, and I destroyed 4 wasps nests under my deck and another under the eve of the house. Now I am seeing them flit around laying eggs like normal.
In looking for cats I did see my PV on the back fence is under a layer of crossvine and snail vine. It has compensated by climbing up in several trees on the fence line. I will wait for cooler weather and cut them back so the PV can get some sun and take it out of the trees.

It does seem like there's more wasps around this year than usual! I keep finding them drowned in the water containers I have outside for wildlife. Unfortunately, the paper wasps never seem to drown.

I saw a lot of wasp flying around an area that I have passion vine in and went to see if I could see a nest. As it turned out they weren't at the PV, they were hovering around a Acer Maple there and would briefly touch leaves and up again. There were like twenty or more and the tree is very small and thin so I know it wasn't for nest site selection. I think they were getting a sticky substance off of the leaves maybe?
