Hurray! I love this entire week of celebrating the beauty of amaryllis. So much so that I went out and bought a lovely bulb on sale at Walmart.
It doesn't seem to have a name, just listed as red and white amaryllis. Does anyone recognize this one?

Walmart is selling them as summer blooming bedding plants.

From the ATP database:
What a sweet orange bloom.
Lovey dubby

There are so many beautiful cultivars in our database. Hurray!

Maybe the neighbors would love to have Abigail come harvest the chickweed. Whistling Way to go Abigail.

I love Winter Sowing seeds. Green Grin!

They sure do look like they could be the same plant. Thank you Dave.
I can't wait for it to start growing and blooming.

When danger of frost is past I am going to plant it outdoors, to see if it will make it through out winters.

I bought some of those last year, Lynn. Exact same ones as you did plus some solid red ones. The bulbs are huge this year. One of them rebloomed for me during the summer! They are planted outside in the ground (as we have mild Winters in Florida).

I bought several of these amaryllis on clearance at Wally World for $1.50 each. I may buy some more this year when they are discounted or clearanced again. A very elegant plant and bloom! I felt like I got a steal of a deal for the clearance price!

If you wait until the sale, then the selection will be less, but hey! for $1.50 .... who cares! Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing

And they make very nice gifts in a pretty container with a bow. Could make a cheap Christmas or hostess present. Smiling

Walmart here has pink ones, too. Even for their regular price of about $3, what a deal!

Yes, that is Minerva - a popular big box store amaryllis.

I hope you did! I have about 20 different ones, plus some I hybridized - a long term project!

I actually don't have any in the house. Just not doing house plants anymore. BUT, I do have one, a red, that I planted about 8 years ago, outdoors against the west facing foundation of our house. It has been through single digit temps one year, teens and 20's other years. And it is still alive. It hasn't bloomed since I planted it outdoors though. Sad
Maybe one year it will surprise me.

Perhaps the bulb is planted too deeply, or it is not getting enough sunlight? Is the bulb planted about a third of the way above the soil line?

No, it is planted with the bulb under ground. Otherwise it would freeze and turn to mush.

@valleylynn - ok, that might be your problem then. This spring, try raising it up, so the shoulders are above ground. About 1/3 of the bulb should be above ground. In the fall though, you will need to cover it back up, or dig the bulb up and store it in a garage some place like that. It actually takes about 2 years for the bulb to form a bloom, so it might not bloom the first year. The bulbs works on 2 years of blooms at a time. It is worth the effort though!

This one has been in that spot for many years. But I will certainly try to dig it up and plant it higher. I am thinking in the fall I could mound mulch up around the exposed bulb?

Yes, that is what I would do - since it has lived this long in your weather, I think some mulch would do the trick. My fingers are crossed Crossing Fingers! hoping it will bloom for you - although you might need to wait another season or two - all depends if there is a bloomed formed inside the bulb or not.

As soon as the ground thaws and things warm up a bit I will see if I can make the changes and hope for a bloom. Hurray!
