I just love zinnias. They must be my favorite annual. Just bloom and bloom until frost, great colors and easy to start. So I have a habit of planting them around the daylily beds.

These in the picture are State Fair Zinnias that I bought as started plants early spring and planted in the small terrace that is above my daylily plateau raised bed in the back yard.

So I had also planted some plants in my front yard in the belgium block mini terraces running across. They had daffs for spring. The daff folliage fell on top of the zinnias and killed most of them. So I waited until the daff folliage died and direct sowed in there. Sucess! There are small seedlings coming up all over the place. So my plan of having a zinnia patch in back of those front rows of daylilies just might work out yet.

Not having sucess over on the other side of the front yard were I also had scattered seed at the same time. These never came up. So today I planted some I had started in seed trays and also scattered some more seeds in there in back and around the plantlets. Watered both sides well. I hope these come up and the seedlings take.

I really like the look I get of the zinnias blooming in back of the daylilies. Plus of course they give color later in the year when there are no daylily blooms. When they bloom at the same time it is just even more of a riot of color.

I like Zinnias, too. Rescued some White Profusion from the office parking area (sprinkler system was down) and they look wonderful.

nearly 30 years ago... I used to grow all my daylilies in mixed beds with other plants - then when I really got into daylilies they were all in beds of only daylilies. Now, I am back to mixing them back into the perennials. I find that I am really enjoying seeing them mixed in.

My Mom thought I had a zinnia planted in one of the beds - but knows I rarely plant annuals because it is to difficult for me to plant things each year. It was one of the new types of coneflower! Looks just like a zinnia from a few feet away!

I planted Dianthus and a couple of Littletunia Petunias around the rim on the new Daylily bed. Mixed in a few Lilies down the middle.

I just love zinnias. My seedlings that I transplanted out front all took and are doing great. I was worried about them because they are really small. But I figgured they could grow better in ground than in the starter trays.

I love zinnias but they never grow for me now snap dragons do very well if you remember to buy some to plant ;0)

I have lots of snap dragons here too but not as many as I do the zinnias.

You have a beautiful place Rita, wish I had the energy you do. I did put a new butterfly bush in this year for the hummers.

Ha, Fred I have seen pictures of some of your projects like your seedling beds. You do tons of work.

Zinnias in the terraces garden. Now that the daylilies there are just about finished there the zinnias supply the summer color. You can just make out W. Oranges for Christmas facing the wrong way from the camera at the right.

I had a space at the end of one of my beds that was too narrow for another block of daylilies so I sowed seeds of the little 'Cut and Come Again' zinnias. They came right up and have bloomed wonderfully. They add a lot of color to what would be a bare space. I have planted tall sunflowers behind a bed of tall daylilies. They are about five feet tall and are about to bloom. They nicely block the view of a weedy area.

Poplarcreek, did you direct sow them in the ground in spring? I like that idea! Buying annuals is just so expensive - seeds are a good option. I don't have anywhere to start any ahead of time though.

Backyard zinnias supply much needed color in back of my mostly bloomed out daylily plateau.

I used to plant zinnias years ago and stopped doing that. This year I decided to give them a try again. I direct sowed them and in no time they grew and are now blooming. I especially like the fact that they attract butterflies so I think I will be planting them again next summer. Yours are beautiful Rita!!!

Zinnias are my favorite annual and just plain a favorite flower of mine. They bloom so much and have so much color. They keep blooming when other flowers around here are done. They are great additions to the garden.
