These are earlier than anticipated, but very nice to see after 2 days of constant snow shoveling! Even though I'm tired they make me feel a lot spring-ier. Big Grin

Silene from Short and Sweet - overnight
Salvia coccienea Jewel Pink - couple of days
Salvia coccienea Jewel Red - couple of days
Malcomia maritima - couple of days
Salvia patens Blue Angel - 3 days
Succisa pratensis - 4 days

These were all processed the same - vermiculite in sealed containers, indoors, with ambient light and temps.

That's great Chelle Hurray!

I have no space for a light setup indoors, so it'll be interesting to see how well these will hold. Arlene, have you tried leaving any of your vermiculite seedlings in their original containers for longer periods of time? Last year I had some species hold over for several months, but I'm unsure if they will all respond the same.

Um, yes, I did. Just couldn't get to them. They sort of were on "hold," growth wise then when I finally got them potted up, they grew fine. Not sure which ones anymore though.

I potted up some dahlias from vermiculite already and I am disappointed with calendulas. One variety never germinated.

Thanks. I'm hoping these salvias will keep a while yet. I'm unsure if I saved a partial packet of them to try again.

I had trouble originally with calendulas, but once I started doing them outdoors they started germinating better. I wonder if they like fluctuating temps?

Chelle how long do the calendulas bloom for you? I was just going to order some and thought they wouldn't last long enough into summer...I'm z 6b

I'm thinking they needed to be outside as well. I'm getting my outdoor containers ready this week so I'll try again. I hope I saved back some of these new calendulas or I may have to sneak some out of Jen's packet! Whistling

Ronnie, I grow calendulas with no problem at all. I do try to give them afternoon sun protection. I have lots of seeds if you want some

Self-sown plants will bloom here for a good three months, Ronnie; right up until about the second frost. My direct sown (late... July6th) plants began blooming about the 3rd week in August, so those bloomed just shy of two months.

These were the direct sown. Pics were taken October 17th.

I love them for their late summer color...when most everything else is done or looking shabby. Smiling

Did you presoak your salvia seeds, Chelle?

I am still in wintersowing mode. I am sticking with regular potting mix in soda bottles, but I am running out of soda bottles...

I am going to try sowing with vermiculite indoors on my light shelves. It will be my first experiment of sowing with vermiculite.

I sympathize with your lack of space for light shelves, Chelle. This is the first year I have space for shelves! In my old place, I fit fluorescent lights in the window cornices to get more light for my plants in the winter. I need to fit them to my windows in my new place. My diva gardenia is struggling inside.

Sometimes I do remember to soak, yes, but I don't recall soaking the above-mentioned varieties.

Are the light shelves to hasten germination or do you plan to grow your seedlings in the vermiculite?

I've tried those gardenias a couple of times, but I think I'm truly over it now. Whistling

Three more "indoors, then out" plants have sprouted before their out sessions could begin.

Onasma taurica
Saliva dorrii ssps dorrii
Gentiana tibetica

I find it so interesting to research these even further to find out what their developmental needs are. For instance, I had no idea that the latter may require a cold treatment post-germination in order to continue development. Fascinating...

There is only one problem with using vermiculite for seed starting!
That is:- it makes it so easy- that you can get even more addicted
than you did with traditional winter sowing in milk jugs ! ?
