Make sure the hook is out of the reach of cats. Tall hook in a nice open space.

My dogs and I are sitting at the window right now, well I'm enjoying computer time, he is waiting for the squirrels to come out of the trees and climb the pole! I thought they must be coming from a tree down, but no, they can climb up the pole.
It is the highlight of his day and as of yet he hasn't gotten too close yet, but I will have to come up with plan B. Smiling

Sherri, what a lovely picture in your Avatar. Which one is the squirrel chaser? Or are they both guilty? Hilarious!

Try Cayenne pepper powder or ground chilli pepper on the suet feeder. It kept the squirrels out of my window boxes and the feral cats out of my catmint. Thumbs up

Can you grease the poll so the squirrels can't gain any traction?

I don't grease mine as the squirrels can't seem to get up as it is. But I am sure it could be done for maybe more persistent squirrels than the ones here.

I don't grease mine either. The squirrels and birds share the food at the platform feeder and it gives me that nice, warm, fuzzy feeling that the snow doesn't!
