It's a wonder that doesn't happen more often than it does. Between digging, cleaning, sorting for packaging and all that goes into it, making a mistake is all too easy. After all one trimmed daylily fan looks pretty much like any other. Over the years I've learned to at least try to give a plant another look when it blooms and compare it to how it is supposed to appear. Sometimes the excitement of seeing a new bloom has caused me to share a photo with an incorrect name before it was checked against an official description. It's hard to undo that sharing once it gets out of reach on the net. I think that might be even more difficult for daylilies since they have the reputation for giving different appearances due to weather. So far I haven't seen much of that, but I don't have too many growing either.
