thanks CJ... makes sense.

I have honestly been 'digging into this' for almost 2 yrs

a few weeks ago i finally got around to posting images on Hallson's site

I think the hosta in question is actually Snow White, by the images i've seen and the description... and I did find someone who has a Snow White and she commented mine looks like hers..... But Chris wouldn't commit to that, and basically said it's an Undulata.

So -- with all my questions, i was wondering how a plant could get named the same name as a registered one, or that it may have been mismarked.

I did question who I purchased it from and he told me where he got it, and he replied
he is well known in the hosta circles and I had not thought much any further until your question

and that was basically the end of it.... but i spent well over a year looking at images to try and track it down -- until i saw Snow White in the HostaPedia.

I understand how hard that would be. The new white centered small hostas look like undulata to me anyway.

Here is an image taken last summer. I got it in 2007.
to me.. .it does not look like any of the undulatas i have seen. My neighbor has a huge one and it's more dark green and not as much white.

Whatever it is, I like it (I like undulata anyway - I think it is underrated). Nice mound.

Terese - where is the link to the Lemke data base? I didn't find anything labelled as that. is it the one that says "Hugo Data Hosta Reg" which goes to: http://myhostas.be ?

In regard to registry, some people who have developed hostas have never registered them with AHS but HAVE marketed them. Others register with AHS prematurely - long before the new plant is fully mature; so the sizes of plants are not necessarily accurate.

And finally, AHS seems to be making an effort to register older varieties. When I entered my varieties into the Database, I checked out the registry page for each and found at least four of my varieties had been registered in 2009 (after I put up my own picture pages). I will have to go back and update my own pages now.

"MyHostas Database Info" shows up on most hostas when you select them in the Hosta Library (top left corner where the pics are.
Abba Dabba Do, for instance goes to http://myhostas.be/db/view/Abb....

I just tried part of the link and found that here is the new link: http://myhostas.be/db/

Over the weekend, I went through existing entries in the database, so yours should be up to date. You could do an advanced search on the NR ones just to be sure. There is no search for the records that don't have either NR or R selected, though

Ann -- it wasn't the easiest to find as some of the text is so small...

Here is what I tried, too:

It used to be Lemke, and I think Hugo took it over. It is now MyHostas Database Info on many individual pages in the Hosta Library. When you click on the letter, there is still this info:

To see all the Lemke PDF files for the I section
http://www.hostalibrary.org/k

Individual Example:
The entry for Kara has two links
MyHostas.net Database = http://myhostas.be/db/view/Kar...
and
Lemke pdf file = http://www.hostalibrary.org/k/...

I renamed the field in the Plant Files from Lemke to MYHostas, though, since that is what I have really been using.

I've never found anything useful on any Lemke page that has come up. OTOH, I use MyHostas Database all the time; so GOOD if that is a continuation of the Lemke. I now have it bookmarked to MyHostas.be. Apparently he let his domain name expire and someone else grabbed it. Have to go change all those on my picture site that link to it though.

AlwaysWeeding - if your post above was directed at me, I don't follow it.

Our local nursery has Hosta's in 5 gallon pots for $14.95. The pots are full of sprouts. I think its a fair price. They have some smaller pots of more special hybrid hostas in the green house. They say will grow outside here without a problem. I looked in the green house and the plants are healthy looking and no signs of the HVX. They say they have not had a problem with it, because they are very carefull where they buy hostas from and they have pots of hostas that they don't sell but repot as needed and they sperate off ones for sale.

Marti - it sounds as if they are, at least, aware of HVX. The one thing I wonder about is how long they have had the plants that they taking divisions from to sell. If they were acquired in the couple of years and they bought from a good source, they are probably fine. But if they were acquired 2005-2006, I think that was the height of nurseries getting plants they didn't know were diseased. If that happened, they could have made divisions and further infected other plants in their stock.

Bottom line, it's still a good idea to treat each new acquisition as potentially infected and sterilize your tools (including hands) well between plants.

Their plants that they take starts from they have had for over 5 years. I looked at everyone in the green house and saw no sign of the HVX. I have pictures of what it looks like and take it with me when ever I go look at Hosta's. Some of their plants they've had for over 10 years. They let them grow big than sperate off baby's for sale in gallon pots. They have not sperated the 5 gallon pots yet so I'm plannin on buying at least one before they sperate them.

It sounds good. BUT, as I said, unless they are testing all of their stock, they could have infected plants that are not showing symptoms. Remember that at first nobody knew about the virus and people infected other plants without knowing they had infected plants. And there are some varieties that never seem to show symptoms but can certainly be infected. Still best to assume they COULD be infected.
