My mother and her friend called this houseplant a ' horn plant '. Not sure what it could be or where from.... any thoughts?

Welcome! to All Things Plants! I agree with Deebie, your plant is definitely Callisia fragrans. I have them growing in my backyard and the blooms are very fragrant!
