Yes you can do more than one photo now. Very good. I can see that slight sheen we are talking about on your Stained Glass too. Not really shiny, but not as dull a finish as the Stained Glass in question.
I cleaned out the hummer feeder the other day and was really grossed out by the number of earwigs in there.
How long have you had your Stained Glass? Just wondering since you have 9 pairs of veins.

Squirrels dive bombing hostas. How cute. Or not.

Now that Pam has mentioned it I do see the sheen on mine, and I can see it on yours also, Ann.

Yes, you can post three pictures in a row across. More than that it will cause the screen to scroll. I had to help a lady from France out in my irises cubit, so if you need any help Ann, just let me know.

I've just spent some time tidying up my hosta garden - cutting spent scapes on plants that I'm SURE I don't want seeds from and removing some torn or brown leaves. (Using disinfectant wipes on my trimmers and hands every time I change plant).

My 'Stained Glass' was new in 2004; so it's a mature plant. It languished in a corner which was too dark and dry until 2007, I think. Since I moved it, the growth rate has been considerably faster and it has bloomed for me. If it weren't for the squirrels jumping on it, the plant would be quite large.

I counted vein pairs on about 8 or more leaves. Most had 8 or 9 vps. Two had 10. The only ones that had fewer were two new leaves which had 6 and 7 respectively. And yes, there IS slight sheen, but it is quite slight.

That person on DG also mentioned that her Stained Glass is sprawling or untidy, I forget what she said, but mine is not. Are yours? It would not appear so by the picture. Nor does it in Christines picture.

I went to our local iris society sale today, and the nursery it was held at had Stained Glass. I noticed a little sheen on theirs. And that one did not seem untidy, either. I did not count the veins, as I really don't know what I'm doing at this point, but will figure it out.

'Stained Glass' is not what I would consider a "tidy" mound. I think it looks a bit unruly.

But having said that, I looked at some of my hosta pictures and I wonder if "tidy" is a subjective perception. I think it might have more to do with the shape of the leaves which, on 'Stained Glass' cup slightly downward rather than being flat or heavily cupped upward. And they are quite large. Then of course, the squirrels keep jumping into the mound ...

I'm sure tidy is subjective, but I have some that seem really to be quite unruly, and I would not categorize Stained Glass with those.

Good information, everyone, and lots for me to think about.

I still love the thought of those hosta bombing squirrels.

Yes, it would be subjective. Especially is you most of your other hosta happen to grow flat or mound nice like a montana.

Speaking of squirrels -- I swear mine sit in the trees high above me and then throw acorn shells down at me -- it is amazing how many times I have been hit (and I do move around the garden). Angry

Also speaking of squirrels, they did this! (The hosta is recovering).Thumb of 2010-08-09/ViolaAnn/62c90d

and yesterday they dug one hosta out of a planter completely. I finally found it on the next pot over.
