I was able to get one of my sunny beds cleaned up today! I was eyeing my hosta beds, but told myself not to be stupid!

Rose,

you must have been warmer than we were today. Wish i could have spent the day in the mud, but had things to tend to. Hopefully tomorrow.

It was in the 20s here last night. We have had a ton of rain plus flooding so I haven't been working outside. Just dreaming of the day to get out and play in the dirt.

Was only low 40s, but the sun was out to warm things up....I'm so sick of being stuck inside, it just felt good to be out in the yard working! I'm sure I'll be singing a different tune in July and August.

Is it just me, or is this a very chilly March in the upper Midwest so far? The temperatures seem colder than normal. Seems like it should be consistently in the 40s and 50s, not in the 30s and 40s. Sad

TCS, those look good to me. Smiling

KaylyRed, It's early March and so far we're just a hair under normal for Iowa, but at the end of February, there were a couple days where we were way over normal for Iowa, so I think it all evens out. Smiling Next week is supposed to be warm and wet here.... Maybe I'll get out and get some clean up done on the gardens!! Woo Hoo!!!

Ticker,

Is the snow all gone in your area? Those warm days melted all of ours, but it's still cold! Warmer days in the forecast, though! I see sore muscles in the near future....

Where there were drifts there was still some snow, but it should all be gone after next week. We're in for a week of warmer temperatures. Now, mind you, I live in the eastern mid part of the state. Those above me still have lots of snow and those below me probably don't have any. Smiling

Therese, I think you'll like 'Rainforest Sunrise' and 'Vulcan.' I got both of them last year and both held up very nicely throughout the season and grew well for me.

As for weather, we still have a good bit of snow here, mostly in shaded areas and where there are drifts or snow piles, but it's still around. My backyard is still snow-covered. Of course, that I don't mind quite so much because once it isn't snow-covered the dogs are going to start tracking in LOTS of mud. Glare

I shouldn't brag, because it's going back down into the 40s for the weekend, but...61 degrees here right now. Hurray!

I went out and nudged some leaves around (not near the hosta, though--I want them to keep sleeping for a while). I've got daffodils coming up and the good ol' reliable Autumn Joy sedum.

I'm a little surprised that my hellebores haven't perked up, though. They stayed somewhat evergreen, but they look a little rough and don't show any signs of new leaves or buds yet. I hope they didn't die on me. This is my second season with hellebores so I'm not really sure when to expect them in zone 5a. Thinking about it, though, I haven't seen them in anyone else's yard yet, either. No signs of flower life around here yet.

Bah! Patience! How long is it gonna take to grow some patience? Confused

Yay, spring! Hurray!

Speaking of babies, look at these little guys! Not a great photo, but a few of them seem interesting. I've never had hosta seedlings before, but some look as though they might have wavy leaves. One looks like it may have yellow streaks, but I can't tell for sure yet. The rest are greenies in various shades. But I won't cull any--I don't have it in me. They'll go in a baby bed and eventually whatever I don't keep will go to friends, family, whatever.

Very cool K. I was out browsing the bed where i put the lil babies i grew a few yrs ago... i looks like the bigger one 'heaved' and die. Oh I'll be so sad if it did. that was my only success at WS'ing hosta seeds.

Terese -- well let's just say I have a HUGE back yard that I am slowing but surely expanding (less mowing for me and more Hosta and Daylily beauties to enjoy!!) I also ordered 11 hosta's from Naylor Creek Nursery -- Whistling -- when it gets warmer out the tiller will be getting a work out.

Zebra Stripes, Stitch in Time PP18,061, Pixie Vamp, Moon Split, Lakeside Paisley Print, Goodness Gracious PPAF, Funny Mouse, Frosted June, Devil’s Advocate, Dancing Mouse, Boracay

Karen -- I love that you planted those seeds -- they all look so cute!! Cant wait to see what they turn out to be!!

I also received 22 little babies from Diane last year that originally were "rejects" from Gary (bless his soul) and those are in a little corner all by themselves!! I just stick them in the ground and hope for the best! I wouldn't have the heart to compost any of those so I have just named ALL of them Gary!! (Gary 1, Gary 2 etc)

Maybe someday I will try some seeds myself! (I would probably forget to water them)
