Has anyone grown this hybrid cross between cabbage and Komatsuna? I was looking for last minute tatsoi seeds at HD and found these on a Burpee rack. The seeds come from Japan. I didn't see this listed in the plant files. Does this hybrid go by another name? Says to sow in early spring for a midsummer to fall crop.

It is a new variety of Japanese spinach mustard (Brassica rapa var. komatsuna) It includes cabbage in its heritage and and more resembles a loose leaf cabbage than other komatsuna varieties like like Tendergreen or Savanna. Available from several vendors this year including Fedco, Evergreen, Burpee, etc.

Do you know if senposai can go out early like bok choy or kale? My last frost is around May 20. I'll probably start it early indoors. Does it lend itself to harvesting the outer leaves as needed? The front of the seed packet indicates that it's good for growing in pots which I normally do with greens since I'm limited on ground space in the sun. Thanks for the info.

Yes. Just treat as you would mustard, turnip or any other komatsuna. It is not a large plant and will stand any thing short of a hard freeze. It is quick just about a month and a half from seeding. Spreading plant so allow about 12 inch spacing. It is a leafy vegetable so you can harvest the leaves as you would do any leafy green like mustard, kale, spinach, turnip .....
