I just started a small raised bed garden (in sunny northern California) that consists of a handful of peppers and indeterminate tomato plants. I was wondering if it is OK to throw an oregano starter in the center of a square formed by 4 of the tomato plants given that there is about 2.5 ft on the diagonal of this square and for the time being it seems like this doesn't create any crowding problems. Thank you,

Oregano likes full sun so if it gets shaded by the tomatoes it won't grow as well as it would in the open, but other than that one downside, I don't see any problems with it. Oregano makes an excellent groundcover and has many uses. It won't hurt the tomatoes in the slightest.

Basil also plays well with tomatoes, and is wonderful tossed into a salad with those tomatoes! Same caveats apply as to sun, but I've grown basil and tomatoes in the same planter with no problem. (Yum, where IS that warm weather?!)

I'd consider putting the oregano on the sunny edges of the bed, instead of the middle. That may look like a space right now, but once those tomatoes start to grow, you'll realize there's no gap for a plant in the middle of 4 tomatoes.

The oregano would spill over the edges of a raised bed and look really pretty, too.
