Hi,

I bought this plant as magnolia and planted it last year.
Now everyone is telling me it may be anything but magnolia.
I would appreciate the help in identifying it.

Looks like you'll be able to see its' blooms soon. There are buds in the middle pic.

Saw the buds...they are at three places, but they are hanging down. All the pictures of blossoming magnolia have no stems and flowers come straight up from branch.
So it is a magnolia?

It's almost certainly NOT a Magnolia. It appears to have compound leaves, which is not a trait of Magnolias.

Having said that, unfortunately I can't offer any suggestions about what it IS. Sad

Welcome to ATP Welcome! Agree with Kent, I almost cross-posted but got the warning Smiling I too don't think it is a magnolia because it appears to have compound leaves. A magnolia should also have alternate rather than opposite leaf arrangement but can't really see which it has from the pictures. If you'd like to know what it is it may help to know roughly where you are. It will also be easier, unless someone else recognizes it as is, when the flowers are more developed.

It does not look like Magnolia to me, I wonder if it could be Viburnum tinus which I've heard called "Spring Bouquet Magnolia"? Once the blooms open you will better be able to get an exact ID so I hope you will post photos once those buds are open.

There are a few Viburnum tinus listed in our database: http://garden.org/plants/searc...

And more info/images for comparison:

edited to say, the leaves remind me of shrubs I've seen here in the south but I don't really have a clue. Does Mock Orange (Philadelphus) have compound leaves?

I had a Viburnum tinus when I lived in the UK and it doesn't have compound leaves either.

Yeah, definitely not Viburnum now that I look closely at leaf photos. Smiling

It seems very difficult to match up the pendulous flower clusters with pinnately compound leaves, but how about Staphylea colchica, Caucasian bladdernut as a tentative possibility - at least until the flowers open completely?

http://www.plantae.ca/Staphyle...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S...
http://www.missouribotanicalga...

There's also a Staphylea pinnata which I think has wider distribution. If it was sold as an ornamental, though, the native range isn't necessarily going to be all that useful.

http://www.imagines-plantarum....

The leaves look a little closer to S. colchica in some of the pictures though.
