Here's another picture of the Rlc. Inspiration 'Coral'. That dorsal sepal has straightened somewhat sans tape. It is getting nicely fragrant too.

That is a nice looking Catt., Ken.

The Lycaste aromatica was a gift from Bert last August. In accordance with her instructions, I only misted it during the winter, then increased the water when I saw new growth. I hope I made her proud.

Just opening today is Rhynchobrassoleya [Rby.] Lime Cooler. I bought this on an Apopka trip with Elaine at Krull-Smith. It used to be a Blc.

And just opening the first few of hundreds is Encyclia tampensis. And the fragrance is heavenly.

Yes the thumbnails just don't do the pictures justice but even the actual pictures don't have the sharpness and resolution I'm so used to on FB. It's just such a shock when coming here. One gets used to things but I also am aware of the difference a one and a quarter billion audience can make versus this private little group. BTW I see no cropping on FB. It's just a completely other world with 936 million daily active users on average and all the resources to go with it.

In a few days I'm off for a few days at the Redland Orchid Show and Sale. I have no set agenda to acquire anything but always wind up with a car load full.

My Grammies are all either spiking or in full bloom but they are a bit difficult to capture well in a picture. This is Grammatophyllum scriptum x Gram. scriptum ‘Irian Jaya’

Thanks, Jim. That's a first-time bloomer. She's a cutie.

I just finished fabricating 36 label for new plants I am about to post, but right now I am headed out to start boxing up plants. I have several hours work ahead of me and then more to go out on Tuesday.

Fred, do you happen to know the difference in the pixels of what's shown on FB and on ATP?

I don't know how they do it as the pixel count seems lower when using the properties function. ATP seems to reduce the pixel count by about 1/3 from the actual upload. My pictures are roughly 3000 by 5000 pixels and wind up here at 1000 x 1700 or so. I mean this is not supposed to be a photography site and neither is FB but to me it's all about pictures. I go to great length to save an actual copy of the plant in bloom. I try to get the colors and sharpness as accurate as possible. My investment in Nikons and lenses is proof of that. Smiling I always use a tripod too. I also do a lot of macro work as many orchids are rather tiny but still very beautiful. It's the other end of my hobbies. Take for example Eulophia andamanensis. I had a hard time getting this spike to stand still as air moves constantly in my GH but I got a close up of their tiny flowers anyway. With more time and patience I could have done a better job but there are so many plants and so little time.

This is one of hundreds of flowers on Grammatophyllum scriptum x Gram. scriptum ‘Irian Jaya’ each has its own beauty.

Wow, you're going to have a whole swarm of little Enc. tampensis flowers, Jim. You might want to hang it out in one of your oak trees to see if it gets pollinated. Then if it makes seed pods, hang it out there again and let the seeds fly around. You might have a whole colony out there one day! Free orchids!!

I have at least 4 nice spikes coming along on mine, but they're 10ft. up in the air on the big oak branch. I need to walk out there and give it a squirt of fert anyway.

To come back to the picture sizes -
The identical pic was uploaded to ATP and to FB:
On ATP they were reduced to 775 kb and dimensions were 1000 x 1339 pixels.
FB took the same picture and cut it to 262 kb and the dimensions were 717 x 960 pixels. I rest my case. Smiling

Melissa, the Dendrobium thyrsiflorum is just gorgeous, super well done!!

Jim, there is something about a wonderful Enc tampensis in bloom like that with its wonderful scent to boot!! I totally love it!!

Fred, you do take wonderful pictures and your posts here are no exception. The Grammatophyllum is awesome.

Jim,

Here is a better photo with the pot. It was a 3 tiered fruit basket that I clipped apart with wire cutters. I think it will grow into it well.

How did you get the 262kb? Or the 775kb? I was trying to get that information simply because I don't understand why my pictures are sharp and crisp on FB but not here. Perhaps the reason is the physical size of 1000 x 1300 using a smaller file size? But I couldn't get to the file size FB uses. My uploaded file sizes are in the 3 to 4 MB range. When I save a FB picture I get between 500 and 700kb and redisplaying it on my computer is still sharp. see this

Regardless of what my camera produces, and the minimum is 1900 pixels and the maximum is 3200 pixels (horizontal or vertical), I reduce the greatest pixel value to 1000. I do that as much for download/upload speed as I do so people can get it on their computer screen. I am neither selling nor publishing my pictures, so I could not care less about maximum quality, what ever that is. I just want a nice photo to show.

Fred,
I opened both pictures/ the one on ATP and Fb and pulled them over to the desktop. I looked at them easily enough in Preview, didn't even have to open IPhoto, but that would have been another option. It tells you exactly the size of your Photos and dimensions.
Fred, I post pictures all the time to ATP and if they are Orchid or other plant pictures, I usually post the identical pictures also straight to FB. This way I have a pretty good handle on any difference.
I looked at your FB page, what am I missing? Not trying to be argumentative, but honestly, I am baffled. You show a very nice and clear picture of your new bench, which btw looks great. I see the same picture on your FB page, except again there it is a lot smaller than the picture here on ATP. In both cases the picture is nice and sharp.

Everyone's orchids are lovely! Fred your pictures look pretty to me. I don't have FB but I do have Flicker.

Most of mine are just iPhone pictures but Flicker is more photography so I upload pictures both in ATP and Flicker. Flicker lets you upload the sharpest quality but I think there is a limit. Have you tried flicker? Some of my Flicker friends who love plants or flowers, I aker them to join and have signed up with ATP.

ATP gives you the instant chat or feedback from co members who have similar interests, which I like.

I got this mounted Phal. in trade last summer and the label that was on the mount is incorrect. I think these flowers are quite fetching. I have a feeling this is one of the Sogo varieties. Can anyone ID this orchid?

@Fred, I can use your help here. Please critique these two pictures. I have reduced their maximum pixels from around 1900 to 1000, which is what I typically do with all the pictures I have in my numerous albums.

Thanks Fred.
