You funny Evan!

Dave,

Go to a 6'' pot and progress upward... If you are watering every 3-4-5 days don't pot up.. If you are watering every other day or so, or, everyday, definitely pot up. you want a loose porous fertile soil for Alocasias... A little less porous for the Colocasias. You will probably hear quite a few soil concoctions... whatever works for you and your cultural conditions, as each of us have them. Keep your Alocasias around moist and the Colocasias between moist and wet... There again, whatever they like ...stay with it!

Is it possible to get a Colocasia to stop producing inflorescence's without damage? I've only had C. gigantea bloom here before. I've not been able to buy sizable EEars but this year I was able to buy a potted Colocasia 'White Lava' at HD. It is sending up it's 2nd, maybe 3rd bloom, but no leaves other than pups.

Hi Susan, That easy? I was afraid I'd have to dig down or something. Snipping tonight, thanks. Hi Hap, how are your monsters doing this year?

Well, Susan, that was a head slapping moment for me reading your post about trimming the blooms off! Mine had multiple blooms and buds. These are all from just two stems. I always cut back the caladiums' blooms to keep them producing. Duh! Didn't think to cut the colocasias' buds off.

BTW, are you ever going to have another EE co-op?

Evan, I sure hope you took those flowers indoors and put them in a vase!

Curious note, on the desk at the Extension office where I volunteer, we've had a huge Caladium leaf in a vase of water for 3 weeks and it still looks beautiful.

Hi again, Yes , Evan, the monsters are doing great. One Borneo is still in a large pot and the other just got put in the ground. The one in the pot has a baby. Yippee, I think. Anyway, I'm pleased. Thanks for asking.

Pleeezzzz? I was just looking back at photos of the ones I got from your co-op in April or May, 2010. Nearly half are long gone now due to my lack of knowledge in caring for them. I have managed to keep a few going, though. Possibly, a little wiser now.
If you reconsider, sign me up!

Thumbs up . That is simply amazing. I got my 3 giants today from Brian's. I've water them very well and have them in the shade. I have several 20" plus size pots and my intent is to transplant each in it's own 20 inch pot. They are presently in 4 to 4 1/2 inch pots. Is this okay or do I have to pot them in smaller pots and repot as they grow? Sorry for this very elementary question but everything I know about EE's was learned here over the last 2 to 3 weeks.

Yikes, are mine going to get that big?

Dave, I wouldn't put them in a big pot first. It won't take long, by repotting from small to larger pot, for they grow quickly. IMHO

I hope someone else will put their input in.

Love the shots from the Phillippines! I don't think any Ears will ever get that big in Florida unless you grow them in a seriously huge greenhouse. We get enough winter to send them into dormancy, and sometimes knock them back to the ground.

As to the potting up question, after my experience last year, I think I'd go straight to the biggest pot. Mine went from the 4in. it came in to a 10in. and that only lasted about 3 weeks before I was watering it every day and had to repot again. If you wanted to limit its size, then re-potting gradually to the bigger size makes sense, but if you want it to get as huge as possible, why not give it room and opportunity right away? Dave's only got about 2 months' warm growing weather.
