Thread OP

I was given a handful of tomato starts through a friend of a friend. All were labeled, (some were a bit more faded or smudged than others). There were 2 labels that I am unable to interpret or able to make out. I am hoping someone might be able to help! From what I could make out, one of the varieties was labeled copeus or copcus(?) or something like that. It also had a second word that was unreadable. The second variety read as pomadora constolate(?) I have searched multiple sites and haven't been able to verify either of these varieties. Do either of these names sound similar or even familiar to a known variety? (There were spelling errors on the other labels of the varieties I have confirmed.) I know it's a long shot, but any idea or suggestions are would be helpful! Thank you

Could the first one be Copia? http://njaes.rutgers.edu/tomat...

And pomodoro is, I believe, Italian for tomato. Could it possibly be this one: http://njaes.rutgers.edu/tomat...

They'll be much easier to identify after they're born some fruit. Those two varieties are quite distinctive in appearance! And they look yummy, too. Smiling

Tatania's TomatoBase lists four with "Costoluto " in their name:

Costoluto Catanese
Costoluto Fiorentino
Costoluto Fiorentino Novoli
Costoluto Genovese

Nice work, Rick! Thumbs up
Did you come across anything that looked like the first one? I only found the Copia, but she mentioned that it looked like there were two words.

No, I just searched for the word you guessed.

I'm not someone who can criticize ANYone else for their handwriting or spelling: mine stink on ice. Thank goodness for spell-checkers!

I tried briefly to help a seed-sharing scheme over in DG, where many people would send big bags of saved seeds and i would split them up and label them then maske them available to new members.

That was the hard part: labeling something that I received as faded, smeared Magic Marker on plastic, with one-word common names or very misspelled and illegible Latin names. I couldn't handle the ambiguity. That was when I learned that ONE common name can apply to dozens of unrelated species, or a random plants in a half-dozen genera.

I couldn't handle just labeling a seed packet "Brugs".

At the time, it surprised me that most people are NOT obsessive about IDs, let alone cross-pollination. One person explained that she didn't care much about NAMES, she just liked pretty flowers. At the time, it made my head explode, but now I realize that NOT everyone is a nerd.

That was also when I learned that some people didn't use "OP" to mean "a variety that has been inbred over years to be genetically uniform and stable". Some, and I guess many, use it to mean "pollinated by wind or insect, probably uncontrolled, NOT specifying any degree of isolation or known cross-pollination".

Hard-core nerds might even be a minority!

Hey, there's also a Green Copia (the ripe fruit is green with red stripes). So that first label could have been Copia, Green maybe? Or Copia Verde, since we already have some Italian in there? Smiling
