Stop and Smell the Iris

By bennysplace

My ongoing love affair with the iris began when I worked for a small bank in what was once a small town. There was a separate building called the annex, where I would go to fix the staff's computers. One spring my stroll was rewarded with something magical.

Benny, thanks for the walk down memory lane with you iris. I have my own memories from about 50 years ago when iris grew in our back yard and alley (are you old enough to remember the "alleys"?) I'd forgotten that they smelled like grapes, until you mentioned it. Brought back a flood of memories. I wonder if your bank's iris are still there. Let us know if the scent is as glorious as you remember when they bloom.

Hi there Jking,

Thank you so kindly and you are so welcome! :)

I am old enough to remember alleys. My aunt still lives in a home that has one.

I am so happy this brought back some good memories. I am for sure going to head down that way and I will keep you all posted.

Nothing but the best always,
Benny

OK, Benny. Can you report on the scent of your iris now? Did they still have a lovely grape scent? I'm still wondering. Thanks - Judith

Hi there Judith,

I am so sorry. Life gets away from me sometimes.

I did make the trip and they were still there and they smelled the exact same -- Shasta gape soda. :)

While there, I met up with old friends and I even helped the couple who owned the garden with some weeding. In the autumn I will be making a trip bake where I was promised some divisions. Smiling

Life is so wonderful and thank you for this prompt to give you all an update.

Wishing you nothing but the best,
Benny

Thanks, Benny. Your answer made me smile. It's taken me awhile to find your post. Our daughter is starting to get interested in gardening and is looking for iris. I told her about your experiences with the scented iris. Happy gardening and enjoy your iris gift!!!
