In the fall of 2013, I decided to lift and divide a fairly large group of Red Alert from which I had purchased a few from B&D a few years earlier. They multiplied profusely. Of the group, I got about 140 blooming size bulbs, kept about 40 for myself and gave the rest to a Goodwill to pass out. Left over were about 80 to 100 real tiny offsets that were too small to give away--varying in size from a BB pellet to your small fingernail. So, I made shallow trench about 6 inches wide and sprinkle planted them (just like peas). They're doing very well. That Goodwill's going to love me!

wow impressive

Typical tangled mass of 'Red Alert' stem bulblets, many of which were as large as mother bulb, itself. Overall, the bulbs of Longiflorum-Asiatic cultivar 'Red Alert' run small compared to the general Asiatic population but produce a very sturdy plant about 44 inches in height with a typical bud count of 18 to 24 at maturity. A candidate for the food garden!

The originals were planted as a group of 5 bulbs back in the Spring of 2010. These photos are dated June 27th, 2011. Along the way, I've dug many stem bulblets around the sides for give away; even shipped about 20 live single budded offsets to an elderly lady in Tennessee once. And the group of 6 that I gave to an in-law in far southwest Georgia has just finished it's second blooming season and multiplied. The 40 or so I have growing for myself are just beginning to bud.

Wow!!! Lorn, I purchased a bag of these last year- got a bloom this year but it was distorted. What's your secret? Put me on your list when you divide😊
