Nothing new there...I stay that way Shrug! I planted this large pot at least 4 years ago...possible even 5. It has blood lily and pineapple lily in it. This morning while watering I saw this Confused It kinda remindes me of a hosta, but this pot lives way far away from the few I have and the only one to bloom for me has solid green leaves not varigated.

Tradescantia of some kind maybe? I found a seedling from one of mine coming up in another pot. I'd yanked it up before I realized what it was. I don't ever recall having one up from a seed before, but they can grow roots from a broken stem easily enough. The other thing it looks like - except for the variegation - is a Canna seedling. I have a bunch of those now, but not from a variegated type.

It looks a lot like a variegated tradescantia to me also. Maybe something like this one.

The leaves seem awfully broad for Tradescantia.

They are broad for spiderwort type Tradescantia but not for the "Jew" type.

It looks awesome!

I dont have a suggestion of what plant really, but an observation, there's 3 leaves showing, they look awfully big and broad for a seedling.

My first thought was ginger/canna at a glance, that family, but I could see spiderwort family too.

Whatever it is, time will tell, and I'd think it's pretty enough to hang on to for a while, it could turn out to be something special!

I was wondering about ginger as well. Variegated Trycirtis?

Could it be a variegated shoot of your blood lily or pineapple lily?

I think it's Callisia fragrans, or other similar Callisia.

Callisia fragrans (aka Spironema) was my first impression but couldn't remember the name. Although I've had the plant for years, somehow it never got into my personal plant database. It's there now!

Speaking of being confusing - anyone know what makes for the distinction between Tradescantia, Callisia and Gibasis? I see these plants and they all share such similar structures in both plants and blooms I don't know where to start looking to find the correct name. @bamira Do you happen to know Stefan?

Thank You! for the replies. I like the idea of a varigated shoot from one of the "moms" in the pot. Looking at the shape of the leaves I'm leaning toward blood rather then pineapple lily. Guess I'll have to wait for a bloom when and if it produces one Shrug!

With only the pic above to go on, it sure looks like this to me:

No idea how it would suddenly show up in your pot if you haven't had it around before. A chunk falling into the pot could take root easily, but it would have to fall from somewhere. I don't think I had the variegated form yet when we traded plants, so it couldn't have come from me, (but I did have the non-variegated type at that time.)

Variegated Tradescantia fluminensis would be my 2nd guess. When you get a minute, try getting a pic from a diff angle? (Which looks kind of tough, it's pretty short, huh?) Maybe put a common object in the pic for scale? This is a fun one!

The width and color of the leaves do resemble C. fragrans 'Melnikoff' but somehow it doesn't look like that plant to me.

If it's callisa, it should grow pretty fast and reveal itself.
If it's a variagated pup from those other plants, I'd think it would grow quite slow! Could be wrong...
I just don't see it being a seedling of any sort, that's just doesn't look like seedling growth to me, too big, too robust, no sign of cotyledons or seed leaves or any of that.

I think I see a stem between the 2 sets of leaves, would a pineapple lily( eucomis?) or blood lily (scadaxus/heamanthis?) have leaves arranged opposite, and have a length of stem between more sets of leaves?
I've only grown a few of each, and only from blooming size bulbs I bought, and eventually killed...
Never a seedling though, so maybe if one of these plants looks different as a seedling than as a mature plant, I don't know, but in my experience, both those plants grow leaves from an underground bulb, with no stem until the bloom.
So I think that's going to rule those out.
Would be awesome if it was a canna, that's what I'm pulling for!
I'm leaning more towards the callisa, or a similar one, I've only grown the plain C. Fragans, and I don't have them anymore, they got a little troublesome, hopping from pot to pot and growing and shoots laterals out... Some even got "sick" and I trashed them.

Other than people, birds are the other great spreader of plants, we might move more plants around now, but for millions of years...
I could easily see a bird gathering some up for nests, or whatever they're up to...

No new dirt added either fresh or used. The stem has "polka dots" at the bottom which can't be seen in the picture. The pot is very crowded, but I'll try for a picture with perhaps a water bottle next to the mystery baby...will need to enlist the neighbor to hold back other leaves Hilarious!
