Pretty sure this is a Lespedeza or Desmodium, in which case trying to ID from just these 2 pics will prob be impossible. If it doesn't get mowed before it makes some blooms, will add updated pics.

I see this was marked as 'identified'. Please, what plant did you decide this was?

TY for asking! I didn't. I said yesterday it's probably 1 of 2 genera that are are difficult to sort with a full collection of pics, which I don't have and might not (no idea when the lot might get mowed.) If I'm able to collect enough pics to reasonably expect ID might be possible, I'll open this back up.

What ever it is, it sprang up in my yard a year or 2 ago, it got mowed before it bloomed, I expected a legume type flower, to my surprise, they returned in basically the same spot this year.
No idea if there's a perineal root or ungerminated seed from before.

TYVM! I may have to grab one for research purposes. Every little bit of material helps the compost pile later, if that is how it ends after ID. I hope nobody sees me digging up a weed in the empty lot. But I've already been spotted digging up daffodil bulbs...

I learned a long time ago that people passing by are less likely to question things if you drive a plain white truck, wear khaki pants and a golf shirt, and carry a clipboard and camera. In some circumstances, a white lab coat comes in handy. The people will think you are a scientist/researcher/state agricultural agent, etc.

Desmodium seems likely.
Maybe also consider rhynchosia.
