I agree with csanbt, my wife transplanted some tall garden phlox that were growing wild in our meadow. They are right beside the small porch we have. They are purple, pink and white and do they smell wonderful. The other nice thing is that they are a magnet for butterflies, hummingbirds and hummingbird moths.

My largest Brugmansia (NOID Creamy yellow) has thrown another flush of ~ 17 blooms. Yum Two others are budding. All 3 still on the Deck. :-)

And my Roseum Oleander is still blooming - going into its 6th week. It has a slight rose scent. Both Monarchs and Hummingbirds love it.

And my White Heliotrope is still cranking. It simply does not stop and has been in bloom now well over a year.

NOID Jasmine (30 years old) brought in last Monday is blooming. Light, sweet.

Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow (Brunfelsia) just finished a flush - vanilla like scent. My Lady of the Night Brunfelsia bloomed a few weeks ago and then croaked. Sad I also have a Princess of the Night which has not bloomed.

Several of my Camellia sasanquas have a lovely fragrance, which is why I bought them. They are wondeful right now especially since we are having warm humid (rainy) weather. My Osmanthus fragrans 'Fodingzhu' and 'Apricot Echo' have been blooming off and on as well. Also, Aloysia virgata (Sweet Almond Bush) is still throwing a few blooms out, but they are kind of sparse.

My White Heliotrope is still blooming and it has a great scent. It never stops blooming and does well indoors - so I keep it in the kitchen.

Tarev - Is the Oncidium hard to grow? I have a bunch of Phals and one Catalaya. I am hoping that it might bloom here in a few months - it was a tiny plant when I bought it.

Hi David, I find Oncidiums easier actually than Phals or Cattleya, just because it is a water hog, so overwatering is not an issue for it. I guess because our area has a long hot and dry period with very dismal humidity, so it dries up very fast. I can even leave it in standing water for a couple of days during summer and it will enjoy it, seeing the pseudobulbs plumping up again. I was mean to some of them before Hilarious! I thought I can leave them in my growcamp during winter as long as I close the foil cover. Apparently not, they were struggling, but they bounce back when temps warm up and at times will send a spike in Spring, always hit and miss. Then there was a time, one of them sent a Fall spike as soon as summer temps ended. So I changed my approach and started bringing them indoors in late Fall last year, and they started spiking..ah, so that's my mistake! The temperature! So now I got some blooms lined up this late Fall to Winter. Big Grin Before it is only my Phals or maybe my Paphiopedilum that I can expect winter spikes.

One annoying thing with my Oncidiums, they always get those nasty specks on the leaves. I don't spray them water, it just gets it, so I think it maybe reaction to our tap water. I just water the root zone. But it survives. Anyway, I just trim the tips if it gets too ugly.

Phals for the most part I have to treat like a cold growing succulent. It enjoys the cool conditions but really need to keep it dry during cold season. And I avoid misting the leaves, saves me leaf rot issues. I know some would always recommend misting the entire plant, but that is not how it behaves here Shrug! And so far it works, and also allowing those fat roots room to roam, they so love the air, I think that is often the primary reason the plant dies, gets too suffocated and wet at the root zone level.

How are you with Cattleyas? I am not so good with them..have killed some, but I adopted one last year, Bc. Little Mermaid 'Janet' and for the first time I have a bud woohoo!!! Reading about it, they say it is fragrant too! So for sure I will add a photo of this one in this thread when it blooms. Big Grin

Well then I guess I shall try Oncidiums. nodding I tip my hat to you.

Re: Misting - I mist all my orchids with a Foliar spray - ~ every 3 days or so. I water/fert every 10 days or so.

I have 8 Phal spikes coming now (12 plants). Mine usually bloom in the period Dec - Mar with first spike. Heck I have a Keiki that is ~ 12 months old that is throwing a spike. Rolling on the floor laughing If a plant looks real healthy, I always apply keiki paste. I now have 7 or so keikis. Three are basal and grew on their own.

I have one plant that threw a terminal bloom last year and it made 2 basal keikis on its own - guess it realized it was gonna bite the dust.

Re: Catalaya - I only have one and bought it on a whim. It was a salvage plant from Lowes - I think $2. It is 2 YO now. About 6 months after I bought it, I noticed it was doing horribly. I unpotted and NO roots. I nursed it back to health and it has ~ doubled in size. I think it might bloom in the near future. Other than that, my only experience was making Mother's Day corsages from the flowers. I owned a flower shop and was a florist for many years.

David, just remember to use smaller bark media for the Oncidiums, their roots are thinner, and they grow sympodially so expect them to go horizontal and climb. I have also used CHC - coco husk chips on some of them, and they also work quite well since it holds just enough moisture and allows good air flow on the root zone.

Tarev - thanks for all the info. Will definitely put on my dream list.
This is what REALLY caught my attention when you said " I find Oncidiums easier actually than Phals or Cattleya".
Since I find Phals pretty easy to grow (after 3 years experience Big Grin ), the Oncidiums woule be a cake I tip my hat to you. walk.

My first time to get this orchid to bloom since I got it. Started to bloom in December while I was away..and still holding its bloom quite well. Now I get to enjoy its lilac like scent..more evident in the mornings. Bc Little Mermaid 'Janet'
