HI, I'm new to keeping irises and I may be able to grow some by our fense by the garage, Its right between the fence and concreate, right now its just weeds so i will have to pull them out and put in soil and mulch. is this a bad place for irises?

My boss lynne has some really nice bearded irises, she may devide i'll ask if i get promission not sure the cultivar but they look nice with tan brown and cream flowers.

Anything I need to know about irises. I got a wild iris to bloom at a community garden I go to. its the native flag or wild iris of MN .

Irises like sunshine and dry feet -- so if your space provides this, you should be good. I'd be careful with the mulch -- it can hold moisture, which would make the rhizomes unhappy. So if you decide to use mulch -- be sure to keep it away from your rhizomes.

BTW -- my sister lives in Elk River -- I've been in and through your area many, many times!! Smiling

Welcome! to our Iris forum. Hope you decide to stay -- and get yourself addicted to Irises just like we are!! Big Grin

Alex, Welcome!
The American Iris Society has a lot of info on their pages about planting and growing Irises. It's a good place to start.

Once you get that bed weeded and prepared, I think you might be surprised at the generosity of gardeners who want to will help you fill it nodding

Welcome Alex.
Nice project to tackle. Good advice so far. Irises need very little special care and give great blooms as a reward.

Your welcome. we had a talk, my staff said I need to weed and show more attention to the gardens before i can get more plants from lynne. Lately I've been fishing and showing of my voodoo lily.

Tried to do weeding last night but some stuff came up and I had to stop. I tried to do it this morning but its raining. theres a wasp nest in the back under some bourds so i have to be careful. Oh well might get some stuff at the nurshery and put my tax money away if i have it/ came in yet.

weeding is an ongoing garden chore but the plants love you when it is done and the garden looks so wonderful. I am rotating in my beds right now doing the weeding boogie. Take a photo of the garden area you tend and post on here. we love to see gardening efforts no matter the size.

I'll try if possible maybe I'll shoot a video. once its made up. I have a small hand cam.

yesterday at k mart I got a hoe and some gloves- the medical ones the house uses rip I wore those because they are disposiable but they are too thin for that type of work so I got some ultra thick gardening work gloves.

And you will need some small hand tools to get into the small spaces once you get the overall bed weeded.

Concrete can have too much lime leaching out of it for Japanese iris. The other kinds should be happy.
