You may call me Cleta. Thanks for the wekcone, I am still figuring out how to navigate this forum, but I love iris. As a third generation iris lover who is now retired I am anxious to add to my collection. My beds are a mix of my grandmother's and iris I bought from Cooley over ten years ago. I would love to trade for different varieties.

I ship my rhizomes in flat rate PO boxes. They are tracked and insured. same price no matter how far they go. Depends on the size of the rhizomes and how many included. The price starts around six bucks for small and increases in small amounts. Not much for nice rhizomes. Tell the person shipping to ship economically and that way they will not add extras to your box.

I almost always use the flat rate priority boxes, too. It saves lots of confusion, it's both fast, and economical. You can "beat" the flat rate cost....sometimes.....by shipping in another package, but, as often as not.....it ends up costing you as much, or more Shrug!

If it fits, it ships... I don't think there is a weight requirement like first class, just has to be under 70lbs. Some of you folks are very clever about getting a lot of Iris in a small box.. Kind of like clowns in a Volkswagon... They just keep coming!
Here are the current rates:
Small Flat Rate Box 8-5/8" x 5-3/8" x 1-5/8" = $5.95
Medium Flat Rate Box
13-5/8" x 11-7/8" x 3-3/8"-or- 11" x 8-1/2" x 5-1/2" = $12.65
Large Flat Rate Box
23-11/16" x 11-3/4" x 3"-or- 12" x 12" x 5-1/2"= $17.90

From the USPS site:
Priority Mail offers 1 day, 2 day, or 3 day service to most domestic destinations. Select Priority Mail Flat Rate Boxes are available at many Post Offices. All packaging can be ordered online at USPS.com/store. This 1-3 day service may include tracking at no additional cost. Priority Mail bearing an IMpb or retail tracking barcode includes $50 of insurance. Priority Mail bearing an IMpb paid at Commercial Plus prices includes $100 of insurance. Additional merchandise insurance up to $5,000 may be purchased for a fee.

The small Flat Rate box is only good for a couple of smaller rhizomes. I can get approximately 15 to 20 in a Medium box and 20 to 25 in a large box depending on the size of the rhizomes, of course I have to get a horse to stand on it to get it closed. Hilarious! Rolling on the floor laughing

That is because you are a very generous packer Tom! Note to newbies: the horse is very gentle with the boxes so you don't need to worry about getting flattened rhizomes !! (Wink).

Under 13 ounces, I use a padded envelope and ship First Class. I use a scale. It costs more for me to ship over 13 ounces from Maine to California than it does for instance, from Maine to New York. So Cali might get flat rate while NY gets a weighed box or envelope. By using a scale or Flat Rate boxes and Click'n'Ship at www.usps.com, I pay less than the Post Office price on all Priority Mail. USPS will even send you free shipping boxes and envelopes so you will use their service. My favorite is the Legal Size Flat Rate Envelope. I think the price may have just gone up, but it was $5.55 if one prints the label at home. You don't need a scale for that one. Just stuff as much as you can fit. They are flimsy, so I go around the edges with packing tape and use an inner cover of cloth, news paper or Tyvek. Small boxes fit inside the inexpensive envelopes too.

I am a bike mom....I have shipped a gazillion bike parts on eBay for my son. Rhizomes are easier. If they get broken, just plant the pieces. Blinking So, for a few rhizomes, First Class works.
Don't make fear based decisions.

Peggy, I would be interested in #1white, #3 yellow , #4 peach, #5 bitone. How do we finish this arrangement? I am still having a hard time navigating all of the threads, but I do have a profile in the forum now.
