The name is listed incorrectly. Hosta montana is a species. Hosta montana 'Aureomarginata' is a sport of montana that was found in a nursery in Japan. It is definitely not a Sieboldiana. Sieboldiana types are a group of cultivars with similar characteristics that bloom early and are typical of cooler season plants. Sieboldiana is not a species.

Welcome to the fun and crazy world of plant taxonomy...

Currently, H. montana is recognized as a synonym of H. sieboldiana. H. sieboldiana IS a species.

My contribution to the topic of species vs. cultivar, are montana and sieboldiana the same species or neither one a species, capital or lower case and on and on... is this: Just reading about it makes my head ache! To cure the headache, I can always go outside and look at my beautiful 'Elegans' and my even more beautiful montana 'Aureomarginata'. Correct label or not, if it's good enough for Mark Zilis, it's good enough for me!
