So, lately I've been making a lot of hypertufa pots. Usually I use perlite because it's cheaper and I have a bale of it. But recently I started using vermiculite and love the look when the partially cured pot is scraped to expose the aggregate.
Any long term strength issues compared to perlite? The vermiculite mix sure sets up hard fast!

pulling the moisture out of the mix maybe??... I too was wondering I have lots of coco coir blocks.. could that be used instead of peat?

I've used both of those. Really not any difference in strength. Vermiculite seems to lose it's sparkle after a while. The coco coir just kind of disappears in the mix - you don't even know it's there. If you just want to use up the blocks though that would be a good way. I got "caught up" in purchasing coco coir last year too and was extremely disappointed when I planted it in. The only thing I would use it for any more is starting cuttings.

I have coir in every container out there.. seeds & cuttings too.. love love love it.. but I have many many blocks
